Also a disclamer on my stuff too..

I used 8mm plate and they work well a reckon that 6mm or 1/4 plate would be the go to allow a little more freedom in spacing the caliper over the rotor however each to there own..with CIVIC gear...

I use autocad and rhino 3d everyday I think there is a trial version of rhino available from www.rhino3d.com

fairly simple to use for the dxf just create a 2d line drawing (dontr extrude the shape or anything and go to save as and find Autocad DXF then you can send it to any laser cutting place and they (SHOULD) be able to read it..

Maybe I'm missing something here :? Why would I need approx 2mm to juggle the spacing of the calliper over the rotor? I lined it all up with new pads on the calliper and the piston fully depressed. Looks spot on.

I'd rather not put washers/spacers between the calliper and bracket if possible. It does not look tidy and I want it to look as professional as possible. 8)

Thanks for the CAD program tip, I'll check it out. :)

Brett, I dunno what model your City was.. maybe early like the ones on mine (came from NZ).
But...
Last weekend we took a set off a City and a set off a Civic and they are exactly the same! Both were 9" diameter discs 44mm total width, 12mm thick.
Caliper mounts 140mm C/S.
Both cars were `86-87.

<edit> last plates I made were 3.5mm, and I had to fit a washer about 3.5 also. Next time I'll make them 8mm. Maybe laser cut 'em- when my boss has done the autocad dwg..

Mine are off an 84 City - 215mm diameter, calliper mounts 110mm apart.

Exactly the same dimensions as the "CITY VF" model on the DBA website.

They are different to a Civic. They must have changed at some point.

Yeah mine are 110 centres too. Never seen another set....
The later ones with 140 centres mount better. On yours and mine, the top bolt is very close to the swivel hub <edit> when going into 10" wheels.
My bolts are Unbrako 12mm socket head cap screws.

Maybe both 110mm sets were off some wierd grey import City model. The City I pulled mine off had "CVCC" on the rocker cover, a body kit, mags, and an odd front grille I cannot recall seeing before. Before anyone asks, no it did not have a Turbo - I checked! :(

Using 13" rims and the disk at standard size, the calliper bolts are not too close. But I can see it would be different if I was cutting them down to fit under 10 inchers.

If I eventually make up another set for the van (10" Contessa rims) I will use the Civic (or later City) setup. 8)

Additional info on my City brakes - the 215mm disk and calliper just clears the inside of a standard 13" Moke steel rim (plain type - not Sunraysia or Californian). I doubt the 9" Civic disks would at standard diameter.

The disk friction surface is 10mm wide.

Autobarn have a listing of the pads to suit my disks (DB305) as Honda City 84-85.

I put the 9" Civic ones into 12x5 " Performance mags (using 25mm spacers) there was 3mm clearance outside caliper..

Gareth here with the conversion update...................... alrighty, ive dug out a nice set of drum hubs, 2/4 i dismantled were ok, and i reckon that was lucky, 2/6 flanges retrieved from uprights look like new!, the rest were crap.. (one was a real sod, completely rusted, pad siezed to the drum, had to angle grind the drum of, but the flange was like brand new! )...i better not be getting asbestos poisening from dismantling all these old uprights... ball joints in good order, new set of timkens ready to insert, 86/87 city discs and calipers relieved from pick and pay less .... were ready to do some machining, and ill have to pick up the file for the plate from my good friend the doctor... ive got a track day coming up and i need a stiff new front end! if i cant beat Ivans 970S racecar ill be spuing! although the damn thing has over a hundred horsies and makes power to 10,00rpm...hmmm...

I worked out why the studs weren't long enough - the Moke rim is thicker, and the studs were not fully pressed into the drive flange.

I tried another drive flange with the disk and the nuts are flush with the top of the studs. Good enough for me. 8)

There are slight differences from year to year and I've never seen 2 with the same casting number. Honda didn't make them, they were a buy-in part.
Don't buy new calipers- just go pull a full set of discs & calipers off an 84-87 Civic. If they try to charge you more than $80 total, walk..

mate just go and get the calipers from that 82 civic ;) they have a better offset which means u can fit a thicker backing plate ;)

Well ive finished my cad drawings of the backing plates for honda discs with 10 and 12 inch wheels, I reckon there gonna be very tidy, No filing required! Ill post a pic of the finished plate and finished unit, im considering adressing the double washer piece of engineering and im in the processes of meticulously cleaning the calipers i have....

Ive picked up a few sets of these brakes and am considering offering conversions to people who want brakes without greasy hands and running around.... Ofcourse liability is a concern, something im looking into.

Soon im going to fit these things to my car, might even do a total overhaul, master cylinder and all, after all rear wheel cylinders at least should be changed assuming one is converting from drums, and it would be nice to have all the brakes top knotch.

This would be the kind of service id like to provide to any potential customers, for both our safety's, should i go ahead with this project, although perhaps posting complete units isn't out of the question. At least at first i wouldn't want to mess around selling my purrfect backingplates by themselves, or machining bits for people, or selling discs and calipers by themselves

Costing for something like this is going to depend on the state of your flanges, what wheelbearings you have fitted, the state of your hubs, balljoints, brake hoses, what rear wheelcylinders you have fitted, whether you have 10 or 12 inch wheels, if your running non spacered drums or not. Some may disagree but i feel its important that the rest of the braking system and front/rear end is upto scratch, Im only interested in doing this properly....

Moreover if CV's, Steering rack, tie rod ends, Master cylinder, suspension bushes, are anywhere between pretty second hand and scrap id be replacing them while i was there too...

Bottom line is costs could fluctuate hundreds of dollars so dong ring just to ask how much, i havn't worked out any averages, or done enough cars to speculate whats normally needed... I can say replacing flanges, installing roller bearings, ball joint adjustment/replacement, brake hose replacements, wheel cylinder replacements and some general brake tweaking would be common. So there would be a decent amount of labour involved aswell as quite a few parts.... Prices ofcourse would be more than competetive with Cooper S or Metro/LS brakes.... Im sure i could overhaul an entire system with labour costs for less than a reconditioned set of cooper S discs..

If anyones interested u can call me on 0405 028 911 for a chat

Gareth
