I had a K & N catch fire during tuning. It had become soaked with fuel without me noticing then the engine backfired. I don't think it would matter what filter type/oil or anything else would matter, if its got fuel soaked in then burn it will.

PS - good hp, well done

Daniel

Thanks Daniel.

Yes I think that was it, nothing to do with what filter it was. Everytime you start the car some petrol gets squirted backwards onto the filter. I saw it first hand with my hand over one side of the carb when trying to start it...

In a dyno situation you are stopping and starting the car in succession about 10 times as we did yesterday so it is sure to be soaked in petrol. Maybe that is why it was reading lower on the dyno with a filter :?

Mick, the Finer Filter foam is polyurethane, similar to Unifilter but maybe slightly denser. The oil has a flame retardent in it, according to Finer Filter when they were still about.
Yes I run it wet, using Finer Filter oil. I have enough foam and oil for the next 10 years at least. 8)
I'm always amazed when I wash it out, what comes out of it.

Foam is pretty useless as a `filter' unless it's wetted with oil, although run dry it will keep rocks and big stuff out..

Hey Grant, thanks mate! Yeah I am very happy with the results. What I didn't mention was that with the supa pipes and a webber it actually made more ponies, like about 114-115hp. But alass it is all academic now

that's sensational - you're really lucky to get the chance to work side by side with GR like that.... fantastic!

Hey,

Just for the sake of the Filter discussion... I was at Suzisport today and sitting on the bench was a brand new box ... complete UNIFilter ine there. I mean, the box was a UNIFIlter... all new, etc.

Maybe you can still get them... if you want them.
Call Suzisport.

Just work out your dimensions, box, etc in the firewall then get filters to suit.
(or get filters and everything setup and then make the box to suit that)

Peter.

just out of curiosity, why cant you use (stainless) steel wool as the air filter? make a cage and stuff it

ermm.. would it be cause if your engine sucks it in they are metal particles that will destroy your motor! and the filtration properties of steelo wouldn't be that great i would think..

nahhh, it's really the super fine stuff that does the damage, though anything other than fuel and air getting in there is bad.... a long time ago they used steel wool type stuff, but they don't anymore ;)
