I did the measurements tonight on the RE5.5 intake with the dellorto and it is possible to fit it with a K&N filter and still clear the speedo by a good 2 inches.

Sorry no steel wool for me!

997 Cooper used 2x wetted steel gauze/wool or whatever you call it elements..
Then they went to 2x paper elements for the 998.

No matter what you use, if it gets fuel all over it, and you backfire it'll burn if it catches. Simple. Install a fire extinguisher in your car!!!! All of us should have one anyway!!!

I think chongs on the right track... if the K & N's fit, that might be the best option.
They have a metal plate where the flame would 'hit' and not directly into the filter element... not that it would stop it igniting, but may make it a little less possible.

Peter.

if it backfires and pops a flame then gas it on full throttle and it shoul suck the flame back in.

That would work... but only if the thing actually started... if it backfired and lit up the filter... but the car didnt start... ummm, zizzle :)

Yeah that's exactly what happened. The car failed to start as there was a air lock in the carb and it went up in flames!

Well done on the HP Chong! AWESOME!! :D

Kev, the 997 mesh filters were crap, mine had em on, they just don't filter!

Later997's towards the end of 63 I think, swapped to the Mk1 S style filter, which I have done also! 8)

However, as I found out on the mdu dyno (25.4 HP Woo Hoo!! ) the S type set up flows way less air. Poor 997 was very rich! Gonna find me some leaner needles and dyno again!

Will it make 30hp!! Ha  8)
