I'll be sticking with the central oil pickup I have, no idea if it is a MS one or not, had it a while. I've set the oil pressure to run at 60psi hot at revs, ball bearing and cut the spring to suit. The oil & filter is changed each time, very regularly, so very little chance of gunk clogging up the mesh. I have noticed that when I back off the throttle the oil pressure does rise to about 80psi and then settles back, never been bothered by this however. I'll know for sure if there has been a problem when I pull the crank bearings out this weekend. This engine has done 2 race seasons.

Decided to send the main bearing shells to GR for an opinion, I was already sending him the cam for a re-fresh, so included them. He advised they looked fine, no evident problems. BTW, the central oil pickup is the older design with the slash on the bottom. Cam looked OK too, except for one lobe, should be possible to re-fresh. Good news as far as I am concerned.

Watch it if you are soft soldering- I reckon oil gets too hot for the standard 50/50 stuff.
Cigweld do make a harder one.

The way the solder on the new one melted I'd say it was soft. I have silver solder I'll be using to remake a new one

Chong unless you are racing it, I wouldn't bother.
Mine holds 70psi all the way up to 7.5K when hot, with the new pipe.

Mini Update

Hi all! sorry for not updating for quite some time. I have been busy but have managed to get some stuff done. Here are some before and after pics.

Image
Wiring loom before :?

Image
Wiring loom after!!!

Image
What I removed/replaced from the wiring loom

I also managed to get the weber box custom made and welded to the firewall!!! I towed her to Greig at Mini Classic Ermington ph:9874 7211. Looks great in person, should look even better once the engine bay is all stripped and painted.

Engine Bay Before box

Engine bay after box!!!

Here is the clearance and fit. Yes yes I am just resting the intake, dellorto and K&N filter on the box

It actually looks alot bigger in the pics than it is. I am very happy with the results. Thanks Greig!!!

Now I have to take the old engine out. I have borrowed a crane from Boostedmini so I am all set! After that I need to strip the firewall and paint it. More updates later including the completed engine in all it's painted glory

Hooroo!!

Yeah will do. It doesn't seem to stick into the dash much more than stock.

Have a close look at the back of my "reconstructed" binnacle. I've had to use a right angle speedo adapter, you can just see it in the picture. The back of the binnacle is not as flat as it could be ie. I can make it even more flatter than it is. We'll see how we go...

OK have had a quick look at the dash side of the box. There seems to be enough clearance to fit the binnacle on there and make it look stockish, but the biggest problem (well it aint really a problem to me) is that some of the bottom of the binnacle needs to be cut out so that it clears the box. From a quick eyeing, it should fit fine and look stock from the inside.

More later, first I have to get this engine out! it's all disconnected so all I have to do is lift it out!

Before

Some spot rust under a few layers of acrylic red floated over original Cadet Blue. All in all it was not badly rusted underneath

During

I must say, now I know why everyone goes on and on about POR15... It is truly remarkable stuff! I am thoroughly sold on it and recommend it to anyone doing this type of restoration work. 2 coats

After
Image

Automotive enamel over the top. First coat. I must admit I have a few runs but all in all it aint bad considering it is my very first time using a spray gun, plus I could not work out the flow control until I was already half done

Sanding it back before the next coat should fix that no worries right? Not long to go!!! :D

Yeah I used the marine clean and metal prep to the exact instructions. The marine clean is good stuff even though you have to water it down 50% 50%. The metal prep made the rust go black which I think it's meant to do.

I'll wait a few days for it to dry properly before sanding it down doing the second coat.

I am very happy with the results, anything has got to be better than the top picture!
