Answer: To stay under budget!

Litterally, Redistrip would have made a $200 dent to the budget. I am in no rush and what I do have for free is good old elbow grease and passion.

Honestly the block and head is in pretty good condition. The paint that you see on there is set hard as I've already gone over the whole block outside with a wire brush attachment on a drill. Nothing a coat of POR15 or VHT won't fix.

The block will get a good going over before assembly anyway with cotton balls, cloths earbuds, air compressor... I think that's enough to get it clean.

Yes if you have an extra $200 to spare, redistrip the lot, by all means. I would rather spend that on go faster bits :P

I f you have a sports shop nearby, grab a Rifle Brush set...(Or cleaning set)

Just right for getting into the main oil gallery and other nasty little nooks and crannies :D

a SINGLE piece of swarf missed in this area can wipe out a newly ground crank and all the bearings... can also take out the oil pump

so clean it again and again, and once more just to make sure... then get someone else to do it, until white cloths come out white.....

Good luck, I'll be watching this one :D

J

Thanks for the tip James! Didn't think about using a real brush rather than just cloth  Hmmm I wonder if I can score a kit from Ebay

If you are not careful, typing the word "Rifle" into ebay set off just about every Project Carnivore 'bot on the 'net

The Cleaning kit i got had a little slot in the end so i could use strips of cloth.....much better at cleaning the barre....... umm the oil galleries

Good luck
J

Hey Chong,

good luck mate, i know you will do a great job as you are a very meticulous person.

should be a real smooth and balanced powerfull engine i am sure.

and as James B said clean it and clean it again and clean it again, also use a new oil cooler as they do hold allot of old crud in them too so if you have an old one throw it away and then pick it up again and throw it further.

Grant

Grant! Hey thanks mate! that means alot to me coming from you :D

Yeah I have a brand newie that I picked up 2 years ago at a swap meet for $25 8) I actually don't plan to run one... not at least until the engine is run in. If I do run one I need to change the front grille verticle brace to a 45 degree brace so I have not decided yet what I am going to do

Hi Chris,
no, I used to have the STd MKII flares on it before the last paint job but these are the wider ones, i think they are copies of the competition ones from BMC in the 60's.

i'll email you some pics of these ones and the old one for comparrison

Grant
