another option found on late model hondas is the "C" pin on the regulator. It stands for "Computer". Earth this pin & the alternator goes into an "off mode". The engine ecu looks at all in coming data & shuts down the alternator so you can get more power, say up a hill or at full throttle. You could adapt a switch to the accelerator pedal so at full throttle it will shut down & when you ar off the accelerator braking the alternator will kick back in.

Very interesting.

On a different tangent, some of the new BMWs and Mercs have ratchet drive on the alternator pulley, so that it doesn't slow down as much when the engine changes down a gear. A little saving here, a little there - it all adds up.
