I'm going to pick up the rotors now. I'll give you guys some details a bit later on.

I'll ask what they have in the way of new rotors as well.

What thickness backing plate am I going to need? Is it a case of getting all the other parts together and then figuring it out? I've got Honda Calipers marked A4LL and 15CL125 on the outside and am getting the DBA #191's..

8mm plates on J_A_M's `just' fit without rubbing-
I would go with 1/4" (6.35mm) plate, that should put the disc bang on centre in the caliper.

yeah speaking of calipers. I think I have the wrong combination. Without the pads there is plenty of room for the rotor to sit in the groove. When I put the pads on and spread them as far apart as I can it looks like the gap is about 10mm.

I guess my city calipers are incompatable with the #191 rotors :-( Does anybody wanna swap?

I'll follow up the dumb actions with a dumb question... does the drive flange face still contact the rim and the rotor is bolted to the inner face of the flange.... or is it the other way with the rotor against the wheel and the flange on the inside so that the wheel nuts go through the rotor? I'm guessing its the later... in which case I think I'm going to have to run ~6mm spacer.

Q1 I'd say your pads are wrong there are various ones used over the years.

Q2 The rotor is bolted to the outside of the drive flange (where the drum was) then the spacer (if used), then the wheel.
With a 25mm spacer, the wheel mount face is in same position as a Clubbie S or Cooper S.
Wheel studs- use early Mini ones if no spacer, Cooper S rear/Clubbie S if you use a spacer. 8)

<edit> J_A_M is running a 25mm spacer and the wheels are a bit in- but he does have Clubbie S flares on it.

The pads are pretty chunky. I was initially thinking that I'd be able to make it work if I ground about 1-2mm off each pad. Then it would fit fine.

Basically the pads have about 9mm of 'pad' and then the 4mm plate. If I can pick up 2-3mm then the rotor will fit snuggly in the caliper. I'll try and chase down a digital camera.

The disc rotors, being DBA 191, are for a Honda Civic max 12mm width.

The callipers are City, so they are designed for a max 10mm wide disc rotor.

Mismatched parts. 10mm calliper is probably not going to stretch over 12mm disc.

Sorry, I think you are goint to need to change your discs or callipers... :(

I've got City calipers and discs (from NZ) on the Clubbie, they take DB305 pads. Not sure how thick the discs are, I thought 12mm.. will measure tomorrow.

These NZ calipers are 110mm bolt centres. If yours are 140mm though, they should be same as a Civic. We pulled some off both City and Civic one day and they were exactly the same thing.

You could just machine your discs to 10mm width if that's really the problem.. diameter is the same.
Check the pad thickness- I think some are thicker than others but on the same shape plate.

My City discs are a tad under 10mm wide (wear I guess!).

They take DB305 pads as well. Just bought a new set and fitted them. 110mm bolt centres.

A mate of a mate offered to machine up the 12mm caliper bracket for me. He's doing a set for his Mini as well. Should have them in a couple of weeks. Last bit to fit before my Moke front subframe is finished.

City brakes with 110mm bolt centres like mine- with DB305 pads may be 10mm thick discs as you say, but the later 140mm spacing ones are same as Civics. Pads on them are different.

BTW, with these Civic brakes on J_A_M's car, we found 8mm plate is a tad thick. Almost rubs- we'll have to mill 1mm off the thickness at the caliper end.. To centre the caliper on the disc, 1/4" plate instead of 8mm would be ideal.

Assuming you guys mean the length between the mounting bolts on the brake calipers... mine are 140mm.

I'm 99% sure that they came off a City... my mate who scored them said he's seen the car they came off and they're marked as City in whiteout on them. This is a little strange it seems that the 140mm are usually from Civics? In any case I must have civic rotors -- #191.

Are there any spec sheets for brake pads online anywhere so I can do some measuring up? As i said up top, the pads that I'm using to compare have a 4mm plate and then 9mm of pad. If it was 7mm of pad then the rotor will slide in nicely. The pads sorta spring inward towards the disc and just lightly rub when there's no braking pressure applied right?

Check Ferodo's or Bendix's website for Honda pad types. Pretty sure some are same shape, but thick and thin.

I just checked out the EBC catalogue and measuring my pads I have #DP529... page 89.

It doesn't look like there is any pad with similar bracket dimensions and thinner pads so I think I'm going to have to do a swap somewhere. Bugger.

Did the discs and calipers come off the same car? That's how we do it. Always a good idea.. 8)
