Keep your 8A block Wombat, is worth holding on to.

Matt, I helped John K build Henrys 850 Targa car engine, & along with Henry, John Fitz & Andrew French we built the car, I have been part of the service crew for it while at Targa and was there when the engine was "rebuilt", along with its gearbox. I know whats inside that engine better than most and i know what it is capable of. I still use the guy that did the head for it, the cam grinder, the machine shop, the guy that made the roller rockers and the ballancer. What exactly do you know that i dont???

Keeping this thread alive..

Are 850 pistons the same as 998?

They're the same bore.. but i'm imagining there's something magically different.

If not, I assume they could be MADE to fit.

No, there smaller and they have a higher deck height. When you fit 998 pistons to an 850 block you need to bore it out a fair bit to make the std size 998 pistons fit & you need to machine a bit of the top of the block too. You need to use the 998/1100 rods too. :D i havent done one for a few years now so hopfully someone will back me up.

AHHHHHHHH

That would explain why the calculated capacity for the 998 came out at 948...

Right...

my 869 just lost half a cc..

Get a 1098, deck the head & block to increase the C.R.
Then stamp it with your 850 engine number

Overbore about .060" and you can fit stock 998 64.6mm pistons.
You will need to deck the block by about .156" though, as they are shorter pin to crown height.

I would use a set of std size 998 Flat top Hepolites. Very strong pistons & flat topped to help with raising the compression. With a small chamber head you will have a nice little 850 hottee.
