Post subject:  8-Port EFI Project progress

Ken Elder was asking, yet again, about my progress on the 8-port EFI project. I popped out to take some photos which I thought I'd share here as well. This is the inlet manifold I've been fabricating for some time and the fuel rail that I made on Sunday. Still have to make a few parts before final assembly.

Image

This is looking at the inlet. It's tuned to 3500 RPM using inlet runners of 1.125" inside diameter x 18" long feeding into an air plenum of ~1.3 litre volume. Hung off the end, over the transfer case, is a 55 mm throttle body. Stuck out the side of the clutch cover is the Land and Sea 200 BHP waterbrake dyno.

This is looking down at the fuel rail that hasn't been cleaned up yet from the brazing I did yesterday. The injectors (scrap ones here) are pointed straight at the valves. The inlet ports point up 17 degrees and are splayed 11 degrees making it a real nightmare to fabricate a one-off manifold.

This is looking down the injector line. At the front of the fuel rail is the pressure regulator which is a standard Bosch item. There are enough one-off parts on this project that I decided to use SOME stock parts, albeit from a Volvo. The high pressure fuel line and low pressure return line will go over the thermostat housing and down the firewall where the hard lines usually come from.

Looking good Marcel, looking good!

BTW, a lot of us are now running Pulasr (Sentra) dizzy's in our Minis thanks to your excellent article.

(Remember me, from the old autox list??)

Cheers,

Yes, nice work 8)

Must be a few hours gone into that fuel rail!

EFI! Loving that. Oh... and the 8port aswell, hehe.

I'd love to have a fiddle with EFI on a Mini (one with a garden variety 5 port head). I would do it if I didn't rely on my 1275 LS as my daily car, and not doing it to my van as that is staying stocko.

Maybe I need to buy something cheap and wack it on club rego and play around with that? hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

What sorta computer and stuff are you running? What size injectors are you using and what are they off?

Brett! Sure I remember you. Has it really been almost 5 years since autox moved to Yahoo?

>BTW, a lot of us are now running Pulasr (Sentra) dizzy's in our Minis thanks to your excellent article.

Yea, like I said before, if I had $1 for every conversion, I'd have a LOT more time to be playing in the workshop! Did you see my latest endeavor? The fully electronic 123 distributor for Mini's...http://www.TDCperformance.ca The A+ model will be available shortly.

Poeee, if you want to dabble in EFI do your research first. I have an article on port injection on my website so you'll see why I don't recommend you pursure that avenue. If you want to do throttle body injection, that will work although I have never tried it.... yet.

Poee did you see this thread? It's oldish but was talking about marcel's 5 port EFI efforts, there was someone else trying it as well but I can't remember who :?

Marcel the same thread has some thoughts I had about the 5 port EFI thing as I say in the thread I don't know much at all about EFI and I accept it probably wouldn't work, but I would be curious to know why. :)

Goodness, is it really five years? The Yahoo list is still very active, but the autox list has slowed to a few messages a month, with only a few die-hards like myself left. Better stop taloking about other groups or I may be toast.

I like the 123/Mini!! Great features with fully programmable advance curve, and as the young blokes would say it looks "Bling Bling" too. :)

Cheers,

good onya Marcel,,,nice to see some movement happening

Yeah ok, i`m still real slow,,,mine will be running soon,,,i have more pics of it comming soon too, so keep dropping in from tim to time & i`ll make sure you get to see some movement from my end too :-) No!!!,,,Not "THAT" end...the Turbo Bimmer twinky engine end,,,dam you allways think dirty :-)

Oh!!! & BTW,,,i was gonna grab one of those super dooper dizzys off you, I think our buddy Kevin(Irish) got one off you a while ago & he was having trouble finding a dist cap & rotor for it,,,,think he found them now tho,,, but still i won`t need one anymore,,,i`m going full "Autronic" engine management system with crank pick up & coil pack...it is the age of the computer isn`t it?

cheers man & we`ll catch up again around the forums :-)

I'll first start by saying that my ignorance in regards to EFI is quite large... lol

Reading through your 5port EFI article, I see your problems. Now EFI would be great, if everyone was in grasp of an 8port head, but making it work well (by well I mean same amount of power as a carb, with better efficiency) with a 5port head would be my goal.

The way I was thinking of having the manifold is this. Have 2 injectors per port pointing towards the inlet valve. Whether there is room for 2 injectors, especially pointed at the inlet valve is a whole seperate issue!.

Just an idea. Before I decide to make a decision on whether to attempt a project, i'll have to do a whole lot of research about fuel injection. So... ya got any good links?

It don't matter how many injectors you aim at the valve, the problem remains the same: you have to get all the fuel for one cylinder firing into the open outside valve, then squirt all the fuel for the inside cylinder into the port AFTER the outside valve closes. This is partly a problem of engine management software (which no one does) and physical limitations of injectors. The latter restriction means you have to use very large flow rate injectors, 500 cc/min, that are very fast, 1 ms reaction time, and that means you have to whack them with amps to get them to move that fast. Then you run into the hard wall of physics.
