Post subject:  Firewall Delima!

I looked at a car which is unregistered and has twin SU's yet the owner cut a oval hole (approx 150 by 70) to fit them. The owner just left it like that and i was wondering has anyone had experience modifying the firewall so as to build a "shell" around the SU's and hence retain the firewalls purpose and how hard is it to get an engineers certificate for this??

Thanks
Craig

Many people in the past just welded or rivetted a box in there. This includes some wellknown Mini workshops here...
Mine has a big hole there too, I'm just going to bolt some alloy sheet to it, then belt the F#$% out of it to clear my Dellorto's Ramflo filter..:)

Make up a template / highly illustrated diagram and take it to a local sheet metal place or to someone that can weld.
They wont charge much and you'll have it to YOUR specifications. 8)

technically yes, any work done to a firewall should be engineered. As a round nose has a hole in it already it wouldn't be too much of an issue. Some will say, why bother, but i will be the stick in the mad and tell you that technically you should as it's the law.....

Cheers

It's easy to make up a box out of alloy or you can fit a Mini battery box which is heavier but just about the exact size. I've used both in the past, as well as fitting and hammering a flat piece of alloy to clear the Weber. If you are using a long branch inlet manifold, which reputedly gives more power, then you really have no choice but to fit a box. You can get away without one and using the hammer if you're running a short branch (Warneford) inlet mainold - just. Of course if you have a swan neck inlet manifold (Lynx, etc) then you don't need to do anything, but these are frightfully inefficient and loose power on the Weber.
