Hi Everyone,

I have heard that you can get hold of an electronic distributor. I am just wondering if anyone knows where abouts I could look for one of these, and what sort of cost are we looking at for such a beast :? ?

since you're new, we'll cut you some slack....
The beast you want is the dizzy, leads, and coil off a Nissan Pulsar circa late 80's. Needs a few simple mods to the body to fit the mini clamp and redrill the shaft to suit the mini drive dog and you should be away. In sydney, expect to pay around $40 for the lot at a wreckers.

Try the sticky on 'fitting pulsar dizzy to ya mini" or do a search on the forums.

The other option which is available, but more machining work and wiring (which doesn't make it as good as the pulsar) is to use a Honda Civic dizzy of around the same vintage.

monster there are a few types
pulsar dissy build yerself for under 80 bucks
lumanition 150 plus
honda dissy conversion lotta stuffing around prolly round 250 after machining and stuff
plus there are others most on here use the pulsar conversion there is a whole 50 or so pages in the forum some where

Hitachi electronic dizzys fitted to N12 Pulsar (and Holden Astra) are an easy conversion.
See the thread in how-to forum titled `how to fit a Pulsar dizzy to yer Mini..'
There's also another in the A/A+ mods forum on how to fit this same dizzy to the later A+ motors.

Going price is/was $40 up at the wreckers, if you can find one. 8)

I have 3 now.... no more Lucas!!

If you want to keep the Lucas one you have, a Pertronix Ignitor fits in there easy and replaces the points & condenser.

I think the pulsar dizzy is a better bet than pertronix. Pertronix only makes it pointless ignition (which sounds a bit like lucas really anyway doesn;t it?) - rather than full electronic ignition with the higher voltage coil etc.

I have a pertronix kit on my R10 and it made little difference. By comparison, the honda and pulsar dizzys on the mini made a world of difference.

I had a Pertronix on my 1310 (45D dizzy) before I got the Pulsar one. I used it with a Bosch GT40 coil, and it would fire plugs at .036" no problem.
But there is more spark scatter with a Lucas, they are shoddily made compared to the Hitachis, even with new bushes in....

I would only get the dizzy from the wreckers or wherever you're getting it.. Buy some new leads and a GT40R coil. I had to get a new cap for my dizzy aswell.

might sound like a silly question that probably deserves a 'coz it'll go better" type answer... but why convert in the first place? apart from the age of many mini dizzy's what is better about elec ign? (oh and no im not a 'keep it all original' freak!)

You don't drive your Mini very much Bryan :?: the points and the agricultural distributor are one of the biggest sources of Mini problems (to the average uninitiated user).

Been driving this car for years.. Perth to Melbourne to Cairns and back... never really had any dramas with the dizzy or points etc. Change points every 10000 with new oil plugs and etc. Question is: do people change the dizzy for performance or for ease of future problems?

Combination really... You don't have to worry about your mini not running in the rain because the dizzy cap is full of water.. You don't have to set the points gap (and all the troubles that come with points), just put it in and set the timing and forget about it.. Also it does add a bit of performance.. allows you to rev harder..

Reasons:
1. Better performance- fatter spark and nil timing scatter (ie cylinder to cylinder timing variation).
2. Ignition timing stays right much longer, as it has no points to wear and alter it.
3. Less ignition problems in wet weather (Pulsar dizzy has O-ring seal).
4. Possibly better economy.

Bottom line- set it up and forget. I went 12 months with my 1310 without moving the dizzy, at end of that it was still timed spot on. OK I do have a timing belt (not chain) so no chain stretch... 8)
