Post subject:  Fuel injected Minis

I did a search but didnt come up with a lot.
Can you guys tell me.. how hard is it to fuel inject the 1275 motor.
Does it involve running a puter, I'm gessing it must.
Can you bolt on a fuel injected top end? and what other mods need doing? anyone done it (other than that gorgeous 10k head job red brick I saw on Autospeed)

not looking forward to a carby again

Fuel injection was put on UK Minis to help them pass emission laws. The use of injection on siamese port Mini engines is not a great leap forward, apart from emissions- nobody has yet made it really work like it should.

Many people in UK have converted their early injected Minis back to SU carb.
There is more power available and less hassle.

If you really want EFI you are better off getting a complete ex-Japan front cut and putting it all into your shell. That way you get the loom, all the sensors etc and you can have A/C as well. 8)

As the doc says - on a Mini it was more for emissions than power. Stock Mk1 Cooper S - 76hp at the flywheel. Stock 1998 Rover Cooper - 63hp at the flywheel. Enuf said!

You can hot up the EFI Minis. But the Rover computer is not easy to reprogram if you modify the engine and aftermarket EFI does not work with the A series very well.
:(

EDIT: You can't just use the EFI top end - camshaft, flywheel and housing, and various other bits have to be changed as well to incorporate the sensors.

I found a great site by a guy in canada who tried to do it all himself, and ended up giving in and trying an 8 port head to make it easier. i'll find it when i get home and post it.

...the best place for injectors would be the spark plug holes.... but that would create a small problem.... no spark, mister!!!!

I'm kinda suprised there isnt a proper mini head on the market with a quad injector setup... after all those years....

Apart from using a Rover MPI motor the only 'easy' way to achieve successful fuel injection is with a cross flow head, so you get one injector per cylinder (that is the conclusion that Canadian bloke came to). I'd be thinking SPI is a bit different as it is just one injector for all cylinders.... but then it is more like an electronically controlled carb really, not worth doing.

If you really want fuel injection (ie not content with a weber ;) ) then transplanting an MPi motor out of a Rover would be far easier in the long term... unless you like to fiddle.

Saab came up with a combination injector/sparker a while back......that would work!

if i wanted injection, i would do an engine conversion at the same time - 2 birds with one stone.

... I just found this pic of a mates injection setup on his ex-race mini.
It worked, but had its problems aswell...

Was a HALTECH injection setup on motorbike throttle bodies, with small generic air filters on a twin su inlet manifold.

Kinda nasty to look at.... but you get the idea...

Before you get too excited, a Swift GTI motor with twin Webers instead of injection gives more power. Ditto the Vauxhall 2.0L motor..
