Post subject:  Su Carbs
I have a feeling i may need to fix my carb... (it's only leaking fuel) so i figured i might go to a hif 1.5 inch considering how f250 drivers think i drive. :oops:

but..

Which carb is which?

I always get confused when the Hif44,hs6, etc is used to describe carbs...

can someone list the "other names" for the different sized carbs as per the float bowl position ( i'm not fussed about the left/right handed ones but it may be a useful reference)

can someone fill in the blanks...

1.25" = hs(whatever)
1.5" = hs(whatever)
1.5" (hif) = HIF(whatever)
1.75" = hs(whatever)
1.75" (hif) = HIF(whatever)
2.0" = hs(whatever)

1 plus the number of eighths of an inch. So HS2 = 1 inch plus two eighths of an inch, HS4 = 1 inch plus four eighths of an inch.

HIF38 = 38 milllimetres.

i.e. what he ^^^ said, but in an easy to remember format.

yeah i`ve heard that plenty of times but don`t believe i`ve actually ever seen one in the flesh

then there is all the earlier versions,,,just plain "H" series still with side float bowl but a big alloy bolt fits it to the body of the carb from underneath & they also had a funny little "gland seal" that was common leaker with old age & also the carb bodys were a bit longer.

just a bit of trivia for you all :-)

Works cars in UK used to run H4s, as they bolted straight onto the early Cooper & S manifolds. Their bolt pattern was same as an HS2. :wink:

ps they missed one on that list- 2x HS1s were used on 948 Sprite I think. 1-1/8".

Yeah , I've got a manifold for twin 1 1/8's that cost a 6 pack from someone who'd bought it for a mini and found they couldn't use it for twin 1 1/4" SU's , I was always going to find a couple of 1 1/8's and use it on an 850 for some fun (something different) but then found the sports850 and didn't bother . The studs look the same as in 1 1/4" (vertically opposed) but are way too close together for the 1 1/4" to fit , it's now on "the wall" in the shed as an oddity .

HIF7s were fitted to the straight-6 Jags prior to injection. Excellent carb if you know what to do with it on a Mini (ask GR). Two issues with HIF carbs - the bi-metal strip controlling the jet height, and the float bowl capacity... KC.

Didnt the XK engines also use HD8's?
