Hi,
I am mechanicly retarded & need some advise if thats ok.

with all the rage of people putting in VTECs, swift & starlet motors to get more power, how does that rate to turbo'ing an a series motor?

I have a an A series 1330, if I was to buy a MINI metro Turbo set up, would it all fit in the engine bay? are there any mods I would have to do?

& does it give it the power of all these jap motors?

any advise would be awesome - as I said im mechanicly retarded!

Cheers,
Matt

You can fit a turbo. There are numerous threads about fitting them.
But, the Metro turbo set-up will not fit in a Mini without a lot of body mods. They fit behind the motor and there is not a lot of room in a Mini behind the motor.

Hi Matt,

Check out the Turbo mini site
http://www.turbominis.co.uk/forums/index.php
and also
http://www.turbo-mini.com/index2.html
Both are great locations to research the turbo mini path.
And if you then want to proceed down this path then I just happen to have Metro Turbo kit for sale. :) :)

If you want to do it with no firewall cutting, contact `Benjamin' on here. He does a manifold kit that mounts a T25 behind the motor, without any hacking of the firewall and welding boxes in there to make room.
The flanges are all laser cut, and he TIG welds the pipe bends up. Neat job.

You won't get as much power as a conversion, their getting 160-200bhp & upwards on the turbo setup's. But the 1330 is a decent size A series to start with. If you get a bolt on kit and run lowish boost (around 5 or 8 psi) you'll probably get away with out touching the engine internals.

The conversions are making more HP at the moment, the A-series turbos are making awesome power from an A series.

It all depends, a turbo setup done properly you are looking at around $5k with head work, etc etc (prolly a bit high) with the conversion its alot more and its no longer a Mini engine.

You can fit a turbo setup onto your A series without body mods, its the exhaust manifold that is the problem... depending on the size of the turbo, you CAN fit behind the engine also without mods but its a much tighter setup.

Ill stick to A series turbo, its the challenge of beating the conversions for me :-)

A mate of mine has a Honda CRX weighing the same as a mini, turbo B16A motor, makes 560hp at the front wheels. I dont ever see an A series making that same power.

A mini turbo'd imho is still a mini - soon as you replace it completely with a conversion it takes away the mini classic A series for me... would I do a conversion though? Yeh for sure, not for a road car, but a drag or race car for fun only.

Peter.

What swung me towards a conversion was for the cost of the a series to a similar spec as getting the engine in. ECU and wiring is all pretty similar (unless you go carbs), and so is the actual car.
The main difference is the clutch and gearbox. Its pretty exxy to redesign a gearbox to take 150-200hp, when a conversion is designed for that anyway.
