Post subject: | Dellorto carb - help what to do? |
Scored a DLHA40 for $50 bout a week ago. It seems to be in good condition, I've stripped it down, everything seems fine. I'll clean it up and put a kit through it when I get one. My question is how do I know what to put on it? Like what size air correctors, emulsions, main jets, air pump jets?? I know chokes might require a bit of trial and error, but are all these others trial and error aswell? Or is there a standard size for mini? If it helps my engine specs are as follows: 1100cc, kent 266 cam, will have a 202 worked head.. |

You have the same/similar setup as Josh (minimad), ask him what he runs ![]() |

The Scotsman, thanks for that link. Very useful info. Chong, Josh has got a much better head and an RE13 cam (I think).. That'd make quite a bit of difference wouldn't it? |

I set Josh's 40DHLA up. ![]() I'd start with- 55 idle jets 7772.5 or 7772.6 emulsion tubes 180 air jets 135 or 140 main jets. 32 or 33mm chokes. ![]() This will work to get it going, may need to vary main jet up or down a notch. Nowhere near as finicky as SUs... ![]() |

Cool thanks doc.. This already has 55 idle jets.. Would you recommend replacing these anyway? Are they something that can ware, or should they be fine? It also has 145 main jets. Should I give these try to start with? The emulsion tube is 7482.3 so that looks to be way off. I'm not sure how to tell the size of the chokes or air jets.. |

Sorry but your looking at the wrong part the emulsion tube is the bit that goes between the main jet and air corrector the bit bit your looking at is the aux venturi I think, it does get confusing when you are new to these carbs so if unsure ask Jon |

Emulsion tube is the bit between the main jet and the air jet above, it's about 50mm long with some holes in the side. Both 7772.5 and 7772.6 work in Minis, I've found the others don't. If you need to buy some, the 7772.5 are NLA new. No the idle jets don't wear, try it with those you have. |

There are 16 different emulsion tubes and they all start with 7772.something. 5, 6 or 7 is the ballpark tubes depending on what you have motor-wise. Chokes are easy to get and all of mine just happened to have 32mm chokes in them. I now have 30 mm but I think the 31mm would be perfect(still have that "GUUUURRRRGGGHHH" really early in the morning). Your jetting is nearly ok and the easiest way to get them set up is $150 on a dyno(Autotech here in Canberra do mine - Italian gurus). I have the how to tune and rebuild Weber and Dellorto book and is very handy. All in all a good carby - people have their prefs over whether to weber or DHLA - horses for courses. DHLA has more of a tuneable range of infinite jetting as opposed to the weber that looks better and simpler - not to mention the noise difference. Hooroo Rob Forsyth Miniot!! |

If it came out of an Alfa (as most 40 Dellos did) the emulsion tubes will be 7772.10, these will NOT work in a Mini- they are designed for 1 choke per cylinder. ![]() Way too many holes in 'em... Believe me I DID try to make them work... ![]() |

Yep feralsprint was right, I was looking at the wrong section. Will I need to change my aux venturi? Doc you're also right, it must have been out of an Alfa, it is 7772.10, so I'll have to change that. My air corrector is 240 so that's will need to be changed also. Only thing I need to sus out now is the choke size. Can anyone explain how to do this? |

there are 2 marks on the chokes - the "INC" mark and then a number("32" is 32mm)opposite it on the choke rim itself. Should be able to see it if you get a mirror and a torch if the carby is still on the car - if not on the car, just look down the guts of it towards the butterflys Your auxilliary venturi are correct to the mini - I personally run a .1 but thats just me. The .3 will run A/OK in your mini Hooroo Rob Forsyth Miniot!! |

look in from air intake there is a number on top of choke tube. <edit> if you can't read it undo the locknut and screw on bottom, slide aux venturi and choke tube out. DO NOT FORCE it the aux venturi is very fragile. |

Well it seems to have 32mm chokes in there at the moment. So looks like I just need new emulsion tubes and air jets. I'll see how the 145 main jets go, as doc said they may need some adjustment. At the moment I'm trying to get a service kit for it. Rang one Repco branch and the bloke had no idea what a dellorto was. Told him not to worry about it, so I rang another Repco and this guy asked what model and year car it was off, I said an Alfa around 1970. He reckons there was a kit available but wasn't 100% sure if it was a for a dellorto or not. So I rang another Repco and he wasn't much help either.. Told me he'd try and find out and ring me back tomorrow. Does anyone know if Repco does actually stock kits for dellortos? Anywhere else I should try? |
