i use a very large adjustable, although the las one i did was rounded(probably from said larg adjustable) so i used a pipe wrench and a jack handle, resulting is sore knuckles and a bent jack handle.....but th lil bugger came off

Go to Paddy's markets or the like and buy a deep impact 1&1/2" AF socket. Anything will do as you will NEVER break it doing what you are doing. Mine was made in good ol India and it was $18. It will most likely be a 3/4" drive so you may needa 3/4" to 1/2" drive converter to fit your 1/2" ratchet.

Undoing it is easy, but you really need a torque wrench to do them up properly to the correct torque setting so that you can accurately shim the ball joint for correct tightness...

Don't forget to knock the lock tabs down and knock them back up when you're done

I used a pipe wrench from the start, cause it was big enough for plenty of leverage and it tightens the more you pull, as opposed to a shifter which loosens, resulting in round nuts.
