i was thinkin of changin a carby 980cc engine to at least the spi or the mpi fuel injection engines? was wondering how much would it normally cost? cost of a 1275 engine? =? labour =? 2ndly, i still dont like the idea of having the gearbox under the engine - are there other mod which allows me to seperate the gearbox to the engine? if so which engine/gearbox should i go for? ![]() |

Dude I'm known as an arrogant and rude bastard who's often very thick, so please dont take offence if I'm mistaken, but let me gather: A) Youre not happy with the whole Issigonis idea of a transverse configuration with a sump mounted gear box in a Mini and would rahter separate the two mounting the gearbox longtitudaly in a tunnel perhaps? B) You'd rather do it with an MPI or atleast an SPI engine though they are hard to get in OZ (and in the UK too btw) and you know they perform worst than carby models because of the siamese port nature of the engine? |

I have the very thing he is after A 1275 A+ engine with lots of electronics and a gearbox on the end of the motor and front wheel drive, pity it is not a Mini! |

why did you get a mini in the first place? gotten it sold it - looking for another one now.. i was ""just wondering!!"" since theres millions of other mods thats been done to a mini sorry if i offended u guys by saying i would rather the fuel injection to the carby and as for the gerabox + engine mods - it is a bonous if its seperABLE but again i was JUST wondering after the general feedback that ive gotten from the peeps that owned a mini was, that (having the gearbox n engine 2gether) thingy was the worst thing abt the mini |

Stick to the carb. A series engines don't like mist spray fuel feeding, hence why Dellorto's and Webber work better as they feed the fuel as dropplets (so says the Doc). Apparently the A series like this better than fine jets of fuel... The only reason why MPI or SPI was invented probably was something to do with ease of starting EFI cars as apposed to carby/choke cars, and something to do with polution laws in Japan?? ![]() Besides I wouldn't have a clue where to find fuel injection modules or engines for that matter... it will end up costing you something in the $5k mark, which you can rebuild a nice 1275 with a webber for that price and really kick ass... or maybe even a conversion to another engine altogether... I haven't heard of any Mini racing cars with MPI or SPI, I wonder why? ![]() ![]() ![]() Engine and gearbox separate: Go buy another car or do an engine conversion... Technically all cars have their engine and gearbox connected ![]() |

I wouldn't say that was the worste part... says who?? by far the worste part of owning a mini HAS to be rust! ![]() |

Fuel Injection IS reliable, but wait until it breaks! Then you find you can't fix it and the repair bill is four pages long. They made EFI minis mainly to meet emissions regulations, it wasn't a performance move. They are nice and reliable and start first go, but I'd take a hot mini with a Weber (or in my case Dell'orto) any day, I'm addicted to that sound.... If you want a fuel injected motor, and the gearbox seperate from the motor, then you don't want an A Series! Try fitting a Jap motor to a Mini, then you'll probably get five gears to choose from also. Anto. |

Hmmm.... he wants front wheel drive, MPI, separate engine and gearbox, reliability.. ![]() Forget a Mini. Just go buy a nice Honda Civic or whatever with some smick wheels.... If you are mechanically challenged, no, you don't want any Mini! (BTW, I am being serious here..) ![]() <edit> we all drive Minis to hone our mechanical and body repairing skills! ![]() |

id do as some others have said, if you really want an injection engine etc, do a jap engine conversion. find a mini with a decent shell and put a swift engine in it or something, then you wont have to worry about it as much, or just buy a jap car. |

If you are mechanically deficient and don't plan on getting at least to Home Hacker level of mechanics (ie. me! ![]() Buy a honda jazz or one of those really tiny Diahatsu's (that look alot like a modern mini if you ask me... more so than the Bini does, esp in the size department) [EDIT] Sirion that's it... don't you guys think it looks like a Mini??? just a little bit? Even a Swift conversion into a mini will mean BIG BUCKS and usually are attempted by people who know at least alittle about what they are talking about to be able to do some or most of it themselves to save money... My advice, stop going on third party advice (ie. My mate told me this, they say that...) Go ride in a Webber 45 1275 A series car, then go ride in an SPI, then check out some cars in your price range and work out if the mini is for you. If it's reliability you want, then a Corolla sounds like it fits your bill more than anything else. The other thing is, an A series SPI conversion of some sort or Jap engine conversion is totally a custom job and as with all custom jobs, how reliable can that be?? certainly not 100% surely... Just keep in mind that an average mini's age is around 30 yrs old, so it will be a case of 30yr old parts in the car which kind of defeats the reliablity issue. That said, if you want to learn how to fix cars and get dirty then the Mini is the ultimate car for that! |
