What are the pros for using a double row timing chain in preference to the single?

#1 Duplex don't stretch near as much.
#2 They are twice as hard to break. :wink:

No way I would run a single row chain with a modified cam, & stronger valve springs etc. They wear too fast.

Beware- lots of new chains are crap now, you can bend `em sideways straight from the box.
I bought a UK made, (supposedly) duplex chain for Barney, it was looser new than the old one. :lol:
I've had Chinese chain at work that is better.....!

Best I've found is the German endless `Iwis' duplex, but it's $50 or so.
You do get what you pay for. 8)

Do you have to do any mods to fit?
I've heard that you have to countersink bottom two bolts behind pulleywheel?
Also do you then need dual chain tensioner?

Yes - absolutely you need to coutersink and use countersunk allen key bolts otherwise YOU WILL chew out the chain and the bolts seconds after the engine starts - No Exceptions


No - chain tensioners - I dont and have never had one one - has made no difference on my road car

You can also use c/sk head Mini brake drum screws, cut to length. Do `em up with an impact screwdriver.. oh and put a dab of Loctite on the threads. :wink:

<edit> I've never used or needed a tensioner with a duplex chain. Only one available right now is the A+ type (which uses a simplex chain).
People do use these on duplex ones, whether it helps I have no idea.

I have been advised to run a SIMPLEX timing chain on my 998 race motor, purely as a weight/load saving advantage. Only downside is that the chain would need replacing more often.

I've run one for 12 years now. No problemo.
I'll change the latest Kevlar belt at 50,000 miles... 8)

For the simple fact that I am out of money, the SIMPLEX off my Jap A+998 will be perfect :lol:

But yeah, point taken, belt would be the way to go. Hopefully theyre around the $120 mark :roll:

Duplex = double row
Triplex = triple row ......

Yep, there sure are, you won't see them on Mini cam drives though! :lol:
Strictly industrial Heavy Duty (often low speed) drives.
