Hi All Just curious of how you best organise all of the nuts and bolts when pulling a motor down.... TK told me to bag everything and label into snap lock bags. Anyone got any other ideas? I do not have a lot of space and no real permanent place to keep everything layed out. Cheers Gerard |

Mate the best thing to use is ice cream containers as you can label the lids. To keep your pushrods and head studs cut out cardboard and poke holes in it pushing them in labeling where they come from . |

Chinese food containers are great. You can write on the lids with Nikko and see inside so you're not looking though assorted containers. Buying 100 snap-lock "Deal Bags" is fun. The supermarket 17 year old check-out kid wants your phone number so he can score weed and the security guard glares and fakes calling the cops. M |

I went to the $2 shop and got 100 ring folder plastic A4 sleves for [you guessed it] $2 Get a milk crate Bag assorted bits as they come off and place the bag in the crate The trick is to leave the bags alone - resist all temptation to go searching through them later. For reassembly - not only are all the parts together, labled, and complete - but ther are in the reverse order that you took them off, so the contents of the top bag is the first thing you need to put back on.

I use Coke bottles .... Push the nuts and bolts into them as you pull the stuff apart ... 1/2 fill with Kero / Diesel / degreaser - Shake regularly empty out degreaser in environmentally aware method .... 1/2 fill bottle with hot water, empty, repeat until water runs clean Cup top off bottle and use the now very clean nuts and bolts ! J |

also need ideas for some of the bigger stuff too - conrods and pushrods etc.... The cardboard is a good idea |

I use the ZipLock Method but I like your idea James Wash in Coke bottel then Bag them clean with a little WD 
Large Parts like Crank, Cam and Rods, Once again Wd but in and old pair of Jeans Legs or Business Shirt Sleave. I guess you could do the same with the block also

Too late, all my bits are in one big black Mitsubishi production line parts box
Steve is building the motor anyway, i'll let him sort it out and then see if there are any bolts left over afterwards  
Plus, some bolts/nuts/washers WILL need replacing, and this is the time to be doing it... |

I like to grab the digital and take THOUSANDS of snaps if I'm not sure of how things go back together., especially cable runs and other small crap things. That way you don't spend your day making small drawings. |

if you have lot's of bench space like me. I got rolls of butchers paper and I drop them in piles then write on the paper what they are and any notes I can think of to put them back togeter. when pulling wires and hoses off if it looks complicated then I grab some thin masking tape and the same pen and write where they go. if their's too many I just resort to mumbera and letters in both ends. obviously wires and vac/heater hoses aren't going to kill you if it's a a series.... This method only pays if you have a BIG bench space and it's not going to be apart for too long. abviously I use envelopes for longer periods of time. Idon't like the glad bags idea as I was forever letting the texta's dry out and eventually can't find one that works!!!! bit of a bummer.... pens don't dry out obviously envelopes like to tear and their's their downside. Just putting it out there for ya you might not have enough bench space though??? |
