hi im new 2 minis but have been into building cars for years the problem i have is i just bought a clubman s and the suss was a bit shagged and i wanted to lower it a bit. i went to the local mini shop (i wont name names but im not happy :evil: ) an got a new set of hi los fitted. when i picked up the car it was higher than stock and they said it would drop and told me how 2 adjust them. so i have had a crack at adjstment with no sucsess. the front works fine but the rear does nothing at all. its not on bump stops caus i got mates to stand in the boot and it went like 3 inches lower... help me please. how do i get these things to work.

Clearly it is you who has made the mistake.....
The hilo system couldent get much more simple
If you screw the HILO in then the car will lower, if it is on the bump stops, then the car is a mile 2 low anyway!!!

obviously it requires some know how :idea: . Mini's are not a simple car. take it back down to the guys that fitted it and ask them nicley.

I think that you have got to be joking if you want to lower the mini more than 1/2 an inch for road use. you'll scrape on everything like the ricers. and if your a ricer sell the mini on to somone who won't weld on a 7inch stainless muffler and throw some subs in it and drive like a tool :!:

Just take it on good advise if it's a road mini don't drop it too far they are really low already and pretty close to inpractical if you get a few people in

Ok,,,"USUALLY" the "AVERAGE" hi-lo that is avaliable (talking the rear ones here) will have to have either the lock nut cut in half ...or the extender rods cut shorter

these things are just a little too long to have the rear end adjusted any lower than factory ride height

so, rip it all out, cut the rod or cut the lock nut in half & you should then be able to lower it some more

"IF" you had bought "MY" hi-los then you wouldn`t have had this problem

Matt is right, most are made ridiculously long (even my front ones were) i got the nut put on a lathe and shortened...

They are made for old saggy cones, so they don't come dislodged when you lower it too far, put new cones in and it gets much worse :evil:

the hi los i have don't have a locknut.. they just screw up and down....

i don't think they're too long either as once i went a bit silly and lowered it too much and the cone came out of the seat and i was scraping on the arches :)

steve (brickworx) said i had "the good ones"

With mini suspension, the front ratio is 3:1 and the rear is 5:1. So, if you shorten the rear hi-lo by 1 inch, the rear of the car should physically lower by 5 inches (unless it hits the bump stop or something). Wind 1 inch out of the front hi-lo and the car will drop 3 inches. Get it? Easy.


The idea of the lock nut, CUSH, is to stop the hi-lo from adjusting itself and to stop the thread from getting worn/flattened.

Strat - did you try winding it ALL the way in (making the total length as short as possible)?? If yes, and the car didnt go lower, I would wonder if the hi-lo units AND the rubber cones are seated correctly.

If the REAR cone is not seated correctly, it has the potential to raise the rear of the car by 2-3 inches. :wink:

Definately get them checked before chopping em. Some go VERY low, others dont go anywhere near. My cheapy race car ones still have 20mm of thread adjustment (x 5:1 ratio = 100mm still to go!!!!), and look how low it already is

thanks guys for the help... it is more of a track car than street car and i dont want to go stupid drifter style low i just dont want to be able to fit my whole head between the tyre and guard like it is now....i have tryed winding em in all the way but they get really loose in there and i didnt think it would be to safe.. i have tryed winding in and out with no luck. i think supercharged 850 is right the cones are fitted incorectly..

yeah, i should have mentioned that there is a possibility of the rubber donut not being seated proply & maybe even the hi-lo not seated proply too,,,

But sH1T, if you had them fitted at a mini shop then you`d "ASS"-Ume that they`d done it right hey???

yes , i would run it back to them first & make sure of the problem, but i reckon you`ll find that you`ll have to cut either the rod shorter or the lock nut in half as most of those cheap cast alloy "wide diameter" hi-los that are sold these days do tend to need every one of them shorter than they are,,,especially for the rear end

This wouldnt be the same Strat that had an S13 SIlvia that was damaged during a wet drift comp in 1999 or 2000ish???

He was short too :wink:
