Hi

blatant X post from the MM board but I think i could be of use to people into builing engines ( on a budget ! ). Much more subtle than using a BFH, and this way you can remove and press in guides in a controlled fashion. Using a small piece of pipe (cut to required lenght using a pipe cutter) you can drop around the guide you can set depth easily.

an old exhaust valve with stacked with a large nut and a old whleenut makes for a good guide insertion tool

basicly two U uprights with thick walled box section top and bottom. a seperate piece of box section with very sturdy U profile was "welded" on. without it the boxsection was denting and flexing, the movable piece of boxsection keeps the jack centered

It's a good thing that i don't weld nuclear stuff

but it is sturdy and a 5 ton jack is so far enough to remove even very stubborn guides. you can feel the tension .. most of the time you can carefully press along. the guide will be released with a loudisch pinging sound, after that you can just use the entire stoke of the lever.

a 2 ton is just too small for removal and bronze guides wich tend to be a bit sticky.

allways ream the guide (cast iron as well IMHO)

it works very well for guides.

I have pressed out guides that would not shift even with the head heated at 200 C and 2000kg. hammering would probably shatter the guide. maybe a proper fitting tool and a air hammer would be faster.

inserts are not in the way but if you mean pressing in inserts

I have not used it for inserts as i have no way of milling those.

Looks great

I have one which is slightly bigger and makes undoing the main nut ina gearbox a very easy job.

Place box in the press which holds it securley and and my 3/4 strong bar and the nut will undo every time.

also good for getting seized pistons out of the block

Cheers

Does this press also install the guides?

yes.

just use a bit of wd40 (or similar) and a bit of pipe to fit around the guide cut down to the exact height you want the guide to the sticking out.that way you get all the guides in evenly

cheers
