I picked up a Mini K speedo today, I've pulled it apart and cleaned it up, but is there any preventative maintenance I can do, like lubrication? I put a cable in and it seems to work (including the odometer, which is what's broken on my current one), just don't want it to stop working 26 miles down the road (like the last one!)

A LIGHT smear of grease on the odometer gear won't hurt, but keep all lube away from the speedo needle's alloy drum and the bits inside it....

Carefully remove the spring clip holding the pawl that works the odometer gear.

Withdraw the shaft and fibre cog.

Clean old crappy grease off shaft and from shaft hole.

Fill shaft cavity with fresh Molybdenum Disulphide grease.

Reassemble.

[any open speedo work should be done in a clean environment well away from the average work bench]

I put that speedo in and drove round the block, it works. So I unplugged it (since its been previously zeroed, I figure I'll plug it in with the new motor). So now I'm fiddling with the original speedo which has a broken odometer. I pulled it apart and put it back together and now the odo works again (don't know what I did!). So does anybody have some tips on zeroing the odo? I'd like to do it on this speedo too, but other than an electric drill I don't know how!

electric drill won't wind back Mini speedos, they use a ratchet & pawl that only advances the mileage, regardless of direction.
