Post subject:  powder coating

I'm becoming a pest aren't I?

I want to get some of my engine and suspension parts powdercoated. I have had a quote from a business here in Briz called Quality Powdercoating at Archerfield for $150 each to blast and coat front and rear subframes. Has anybody had dealings with this crowd before? Does the price sound reasonable? (it does to me), can anybody recommend anybody else here in Briz?

dont powder coat.. wet spray.. you cant touch up powercoat when it chips and its no stronger than acrylic. (two pack is best)

powdercoating is only good for large surfaces that dont get touched (like garage doors) because its cheap in such an application.

i know someone who powdercoated their motorbike frame and nots its full of holes (paint not bike)

id just give it a sand and use a couple of spray packs of hammercoat in silver or something. (hammer coat looks cool on subframes and chassis rails)

We've a few aircraft maintenace engineers in our club. They strongly advise against powder coating. It's never used on aircraft because by the time you can see any corrosion developing, it's way too late - so they say. Agree, a good two pack is a better alternative. :D

Air NZ by any chance??

I used to work on a lot of Air NZ parts when I was a Qantas crap kicker...er I mean engineer...

We actually paid more attention to detail on their parts than our own!! Go figure!!

JAM, used to work for QANTAS? You'll enjoy these then.

After every Qantas Airlines flight, pilots complete a gripe sheet which conveys to the mechanics problems encountered with the aircraft during the flight that need repair or correction. The form used is a piece of paper on which the pilot completes the top part listing the problem, which the mechanics read and then respond in writing on the lower half of the form what remedial action was taken so the pilot on the plane's next flight can review the form before taking off.
Never let it be said that ground crews and engineers lack a sense of humour.
Here are some actual logged maintenance complaints and responses with P = the problem logged by the pilot and S = the solution and/or action taken by the engineers. Remember, QANTAS is the only major airline that has never had an accident.

P: Left inside main tyre almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tyre.

P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.

P: Something loose in cockpit.
S: Something tightened in cockpit.

P: Dead bugs on windshield.
S: Live bugs on back-order.

P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200ft per minute descent.
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.

P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.

P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to more believable level.

P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That's what they're there for.

P: IFF inoperative.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.

P: Suspected crack in windshield.
S: Suspect you're right.

P: Number 3 engine missing.
S: Engine found on right wing after brief search.

P: Aircraft handles funny.
S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right and be serious.

P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.

P: Mouse in cockpit.
S: Cat installed.
:P

Why is the Qantas jet fitted with IFF and Target radar?

Wrong! Qantas has had fatal accidents on more than one occasion.

Guys,
Dont mean to be arguementative but I have a different experience with coating. If you are doing a resto then best option is to use a baked enamel if you can find someone who still paints in this style. 2pak while flexible, when it chips from say jacking the car up it chips off big time. The clack clack cans arent bad but the coating is a little porous and you can get rust break throughs after a while no matter how well it is prepared. Powder coating is often used as it is not porous at all and is highly tollerant to water hence used on alloy wheels to solve metal porosity problems. But the other guys are right you need to prepare the surface very well. It comes down to the task it is to be used for. There is a place in Brisbane next door to Westside Automotive (cant recall name) but it is near westlake. They are very cheap and do good work. PS Westside do awesome performance work and specialize in NOS systems if you need some more grunt for the little fella. They modified a Porsche 911 turbo I used to own and it went like stink, and were very cheap, despite being the most meticulous engine builders I have ever seen. They build their motors in a dust free booth, crazy stuff.

Generally when ive enquired about powder coating theyve always said to get the item sandblasted first........it has to be as clean as possible basically......

So in accounting for the cost of sandblasting & powdercoating youd prob be looking at around 300 all up................
