No Why bother with drop gears? are you racing this thing? is it being rebuilt every 3rd meet?

Drop gears, i hear, wear out very quickly and that aint great for a roadie...

Are you planning to make 200+hp in your car? if not don't bother. Ask Grant who's run a std gearbox on his supercharged and now turbocharged beast for the past 2 years+...

"Gearboxes don't break themselves, people break gearboxes" Guess who I just quoted

I think we are getting a tad confused here, do you mean standard drop gears, straight cut drop gears or dog gears (I think)...

I think the reason for having the different drop gears is so that you can change the gear ratio easier (as in changing from 1:1 drop gears to 1:whatver else is available), if they are straight cut their might be less power loss from the transmission - but its probably cheaper and an easier option just removing weight from the car for the "extra" power you'd gain.

The good Dr can probably give you a much better explaination than this though.

"Drop gears" as they are commonly referred to as idler gears in almost all instances.

I think the correct name is Transfer Gears

In which case the reason for smaller or larger gears is to change final drive ratio, probably so you don't have to pull the diff off to do it?
