Howdy,

Anyone got Thermo-tec on their exhaust? I want to know (not hearsay) if the rust is any worste on headers wrapped with this stuff than without? I hear that it is because of extreme heat that they get eaten away and not because of rust.

JetHot, anyone had this done? how much did it cost?

Is there any sort of DIY paint on ceramic coatings that you can do yourself and cure it in situ (on the dyno say) or in an oven or something?

Love to hear from anyone who has this on their current setup or has experience on this topic, esp from racers

I put exhaust wrap on the extractors on my VL because the extra heat generated without the heat shield has a habit of cooking the dizzy. I've had no issues with it at all. I peeled them off the other day and there was no more rust under there than what was there when I put them on (2nd hand). Keeps the engine bay temps down and saves my dizzy. Good thing.

My headers cracked and corroded through in about two months when i put that Thermo-tec wrap on. But they weren't new pipes.

Still very disappointing, though.

Yeah mixed reviews about the wrap...

I will of course be using them on the (slightly premium) Russell Engineering Supa Pipes and if it will corode them in 2 years I'd rather not! That said they will be brand new and they will have been made of SS?

Has anyones used Techline coatings? they sell a paint on, air dry, cures in car ceramic reinforced paint that apparently works quite well? I'd rather that than wraps if it reduces corosion?

I wrapped my turbo manifold (starlet) as the heat was intense......it melted the glue on the bonnet that holds the bracing to it!

It's been on there for over a year now, with no problems......it certainly cut down the heat.

The steam pipe manifold is alot thicker material than extractors are normally made of........

I put exhaust wrap on my 3-2-1's cant see any dramas with it so far. Heaps less heat under the bonnet now!

I put fiberglass wrap tape on my Maniflow extractors. The tape is very thick and about 50 mm wide. A bit thicker than the brand name stuff.

I painted the extractors with flame paint first then put the wrap on. The extractors were new.

The stuff was amazing. You could touch the exhaust straight after a drive. Couldn't hold your hand on it but if you bumped against it while fiddling with the carb you wouldn't get burned.

Trouble was the pipes were getting really hot under there and they went like plasticine. The pipes went oval and the welds just peeled apart like they were chewing gum. Quite amazing really. No rust when I took the tape off & threw away an exhaust that had done about 2000 km.

A mate of mine has his extractors (on two of his cars, one rotary turbo dump pipe) coated inside and out with that ceramic coating. The stuff looks great new, like buffed alloy but goes a bit powdery & white when it gets really hot. The results are great. Engine bay temp down, but not as much as wrap. The inside coating keeps the pipes from getting hot enough to melt. If I remember it is about $60 per pipe meter so expensive for tuned length extractors.

Thanks for your replies guys. Looks like JetHot or something similar is the best way to go, as it for sure works whereas wrapping is abit iffy... I'll let you know what I decide to do

Does it cut down on interior noise at all?

apart from keeping engine bay temps down, ceramic coating/wraping also keeps the heat in the pipes - duh, i know, but this also helps keep gas velocity up which is good.

I'm in it for hp gain so yes I am aware of gas velocity increase But a cooler running is good for heat against the intake

I also had the heat rap on for Several Years on Morris..pisseasy to do with the popes off the motor. I only took it off to see if thier was any rust. Nope..and they are still on Morris if you want to look for Rust
