Hi all
Anyone got any tips for running in an engine on a dyno?

Yes, start her up, run for 20 mins at 3000rpm to bed in the cam and lifters. Allow to cool. Start up, warm up, then rev 5-6 times at full trottle to around 4-5000rpm.

That's it. you can run as many times as you like to whatever rev you want. It also helps to have an gas analyser to check the mixtures

Chong, remind me to relate to you a horror story about a partial piston seizure in a certain 1310 at 750 miles from rebuild.... :lol:

I think if you want it to last, a little more running in than 20 mins, at varying loads is required. :wink:

Well mine has fanged to 6000rpm about 30 times on the dyno now... so I don't see how this could happen?

Use a good mineral run in oil. Graham Russell swears by KMX (Kmart's own brand) and has run in everything from minis to V8's and formula junior motors with no problems at all.

If done properly on a dyno and setup correctly, it should be fine. If it is a standard road going engine, just take it easy and drive it normally for a few 1000 kms. I will drive normally from day 1

What's suggested is OK, my point above is if you want it to live long and happy, run it in a bit more when in the car... :wink:
after 600-800 miles with varying loads it should be free and sweet. :D

Or do like me, at 100 kms drive to Hay! :lol: - and back! Whilst slowly increasing speeds from 80ish to 110 by the time you get there, 110kph may be a bit high for a new engine. I don't know but I was worried about revving my girl for long epriods, now she is right. Great way to run a car in I reckon!

Yep run in with a straight 20W/50- The KMX is OK, so is Valvoline SF 20W/50.
Dump it and the filter at 200-300 miles and refill with oil of your choice.
I used the Valvoline for the 1st 1000 miles then went to the Castrol Edge Sport 25W/50. (was called Formula R 25W/50)
BTW this one is NOT a synthetic like all the other Edge ones. :wink:

Graham uses the KMX oil in all his cars (not just his minis)!
And he does NOT use it for running in only.

The Castrol Edge Sport is probably the best, but you cant go past the Kmart stuff either.

DONT run synthetic... its not friendly to Mini engines!

What are the critical elements for running in on a dyno? Is Chongs method acceptable?

Edge Sport will be OK.
But I'd dump it & filter after a few hundred miles, as suggested and refill.
Yes Chong's (ie Graham Russell's) dyno running in method is OK.
Be aware that many modern electric `rolling road' dynos are NOT suitable for constant load, ie running in a motor. That said, an A series under part load represents a puny load to it.... so maybe OK. :wink:

ps. Graham's is an engine dyno, a different kettle of fish- they are a water brake.

I would have to say Yes to both questions.
The oil is fine for running in and later (but as Doc and others say, replace oil and oil filter soon (cause its a new motor)

Graham has been running in motors this way for years... I dont see any prob... call him and talk to him about running yours in and see what he says.
