G'day all,

I'm just scoping out Koni shocks and they look like the best option for a bit of performance but not being mega expensive.

What I need to know is... how do you know whether you want std height or lowered height shockies? I will be running 12 x 5's with 165/60/12 rubber so the wheel height should be fairly similar to a 10" rim with std tire profile (whatever it is).

Unless you drop it lots, the stockers will be fine.
I'm running stock height Pedders on the hydro and it's reasonably low, 2-3 fingers under guard.. as long as it hits the bump stop before the shock bottoms out you're sweet.

How do you set the height anyway? Isn't it all dependent on where you have your hi-lo's set at? I spose the shockies have a certain range when they're at 'rest' and if you adjust the hi-lo's so that the shocks are outside their specified range then you lose some of the shockie goodness?

Yes you set the height (on dry cars) with Hi-Los if you've got 'em, or cut the trumpets if you don't.
The shockie has a certain travel. Its characteristics are the same for the full stroke. <edit> It is not a spring..
Doesn't matter a rats where it sits, as long as it doesn't bottom out at ends of travel.
All the lowered ones are really just shorter shockies..

have you thought of using gaz shocks? i have a set of lowered gaz shocks ready to go on my mini, and they look very well made and are very compeditive on price( i did get these from the uk though.)

I was under the impression that Gaz are hard to come by in australia?

Are they a bit cheaper than Koni's with similar quality?

Konis= last pretty much forever, then can be rebuilt.
Downside is adjustment- they need to be pushed in and rotated to adjust. Not a dial adjuster like others. But onece set you can forget.

I'd stay away from Spax though, they were crap years ago and still are!

Im runnin SPAX all round, they are lowered shocks, they have 15 adjustments on the which is just done with a flat blade screwdriver on the car. They have been great compared to the Gabriel Red Ryders I had on years ago. The only down side I think is though, is the price!! Pretty sure I paid bout $400 for a pair cupla yrs ago.

I'm Staying with the Yellow Koni's

I had a set on front of a Fiat 124S, couldn't ever get the damping the same on both. Then, they leaked. Agents here were no help- so I flung them and bought Konis.

Recently KC panned them on MM forum- he said quality has now gone well downhill.

Hmmmm, fingers crossed. Its not the 1st time Ive heard bad things about them.
