Mr Skinner (him of SU design fame) apparently thought an integral throttle return spring was a needless accessory. :?

I always do it on to tune su s, after I ensure the oil has distributed. If all is well with the induction system they just scream, if not they dont overfuel and find a range to rev in. Give you a good idea of where your su is at. You know its right when its about to take off, but ensure it cant open all the way before you do it.

It was of more benefit on multi-carbs, that way you knew what the max throttle position was on each carb and adjusted the linkange accordingly.

ensure it cant open all the way before you do it. Make sure at least the last 20 percent doesnt open or it may go bang. Dont do it unless you are 100 percent sure of the rest of your engine.

no problem with that. It should be stressed that it shouldnt be done unless you are ready for the potential consequences.
