I've just dropped the engine(1100) into my 61 850 shell after 6 years of anticipation.
The front end has been replaced, panels and sub-frame by the look of things.
Once I got the engine with mounts attached, sitting on the sub-frame the mounts were sitting high by about 2 inches. Is this how it is supposed to be?
After a lot of pushing and wriggling I have got the bolts through, but I am a tad concerned. What makes me wonder is that now when I go the bolt on the 1.5" SU with spacer plate the air filter hits the bulk head. Without the spacer there is not enough thread to bolt down the carbie. I have the modified original manifold (intake only, exhaust ground off).
Any opinion would be helpful

That's normal. I had someone sit on my engine to get the mounts to align.

I stood on the engine to line them up.
Body mass can be a good thing

Current crop of engine mounts are about 1mm too wide, meaning increased effort to get the engine bolted in. When I put my engine in a month ago, I had this exact problem except the mounts wouldn't line up at all. Bought one mount with captive nuts which was 1mm thinner, and managed to get it all in. If I had a helper I would probably have got it in (brute force and ignorance required) but I was working alone and changing the engine mount was easier!

Regarding your HS4, I put an HS4 on my car with a Mini Spares manifold and left the spacer off - had to use shorter bolts instead of studs. Should fit fine with the ground manifold with the spacer - I previously had one fitted like this. I'm assuming you're either using the original air filter or a ramflo, not much else fits.

Yes I've got the ram flow filter. I am considering getting the spacer on the Mill and just cutting it back to suit.

If you've got the means then make the spacer as thin as you can. Firewall clearance is more important than intake length! Just bear in mind you need the throttle linkage to clear the manifold, which is not an issue on the MS manifold but is on the standard manifold.

Linkage clearance. Yes I was looking at that last night. I've worked out that if I mill each face of the spacer at 2 or 3° I will end up with a spacer half as thick at the top than the bottom. Hopefully this will give the best of both worlds, linkage clearance and fire wall clearance. I am making a plastic model today to see how it goes. No use chopping up a perfectly good spacer for nothing. I'll take some pics if anyone is interested.
