Post subject:  Disc Brake Conversion

Hey All,

Is there much work involved in putting on disk brakes, after taking off my drums? Is it just a straight swap?

depends on what you have.

To put discs on you will need the disc brake hub, caliper, disc brake cv joint, and flange (thing wheel bolts to). It can be a straight swap if you have all these parts.

It depends what discs.
If you fit 7.5" S brakes or later 8.4" ones (with swivel hubs, CVs, drive flanges, discs, calipers) yes it is a straight swap. You use your driveshafts- just knock out of the CVs and swap them into the new ones. Downside is cost- S brakes are worth heaps, 8.4s are a bit cheaper.

If you are fitting Hondas there's a bit of machining involved, but you keep your drum type CVs, swivel hubs, and drive flanges. So, it's much cheaper, which is why people do it.
Coupla hundred $$.

Any disc brake setup is better than Mini front drum brakes these days, IMO.
They stop straight and are self adjusting.

Don't forget that if you fit discs to the front you have to change the rear wheel cylinders as well.

Yes it's a good idea to fit S ones, 5/8" diameter. Stock drum brake Minis used 3/4".

But, I'd try them first. Hit them real hard, if no rear lockup perhaps you don't need to change them. Honda discs appear OK with stock 3/4" rears, from several cars I've seen & driven.

Post subject:  cooper discs

If your engine isn't heavily modded or putting out big power you can do what i did. Cooper discs offer sufficent braking power for around town and general use. Most people will tell you they are subject to brake fade. I have never experienced any fade at all (i have black stuff pads). These drive flanges use the drum CV joints, no need to change. just a direct swap... pull the drum hubs off, put the disc hubs on.. Availability would be pretty low though. Just thought i'd drop my knowledge in. Compared to spongy, pump-up brakes, they are great.. strong pedal, good braking, and only lock up the back when absolutely jumped on. Thanks...CYA...

Hey with the honda conversion, I assume you source from civics? Also in layman terms what exactly needs to be machined? Been looking using the in butilt search and have given up after 20-30 pages.

Also as an afterthought, would be nice if there was a HOW TO thread. The mod thread is good but it would be nice to have a thread where people can post there "how to's" for things like conversions etc Would allow for quicker referencing. I know a lot of people on here have done various work and could list the pro's, con's and pitfalls.

Cheers

Mark,
Check out J_A_M's site- http://www.justanothermini.tk/ he's put a lot of good stuff up.
Nothing about disc brake conversions though- potential litigation is a worry.

Thanks DR. Just noticed the honda debate was moved to the top of the list. Spent a few yrs in the steel trade so if worse comes to worse I'll just have to make it all from scratch might be cheaper than replacing the front drums as there is no front brakes fitted at all. Still reading the main post on subject. As for legalities, probably get my roadworthy done out bush. Only need the one to register it.

Cheers, seems you have put a lot of time into this

Love the comment the guy selling it made
"Only major problems, to my knowledge, have recently been rectified by replacing the fuel pump, filter, and previous owner."
