I have got to decide on what diff ratio, wheel sizes and drop gears to run in my van. The motor is 1330, all synch close ratio box, some sort of wild cam which I may ditch and at the moment has a top speed that is very low. I don't believe the speedo, just know it revs very hard in top. It is going to do a lot of driving on freeways towing a light flat top trailer with a kart on it and all the race gear inside. I know nothing about gearing these things, just that the gearing it is running is a joke at 100kph. Any ideas on gearing and a cam and what size wheels....10, 12 or 13's??? |

If you don't mind it being slower off the mark, (considering SCCR box) fit a 3.44. If you are going to use for track only, I'd fit a 3.765. (probably what it's got if revving its tits off). If you can't decide between the 2 above, fit a 3.647.. 
What rpm does the came `come in' at? If over 3000 they are a PITA to drive, for road use.

Kevin, I forgot to mention it is on 10's at the moment. Are there any charts anywhere with all the combinations of wheels/diffs/drop gears, that give answers to this. I am not after a track ratio, we travel from Sydney to Wakefield at least once a month and if he runs it at the track he can put up with the ratio that will be in it. Anyway he has his karts to do that in. A bit quicker than a Mini at any track! |

I would fit a 3.44, but just be aware that off the mark with the 2.5:1 (approx) 1st gear, it will be a bit slower. A 1330 will pull a 3.44 diff easily, even with 13" wheels. Not much higher ratio available here in Oz- 3.44 was the tallest we got.
If you could find one in UK, 3.1 would be nice for highway use. |

Can't find my book with the gear ratios.. so.. you will have to do some arithmetic from info below: NOTE: standard drop gear ratio is 1:1. OK found this in Vizard's HTMYM.. 4 synchro SCCR gearset- 1st 2.543:1 2nd 1.73:1 3rd 1.257:1 4th 1:1 By comparison, MK2 S gears are: 1st 3.3:1 2nd 2.07:1 3rd 1.35:1 4th 1:1 and Mini K & std rodchange (pre-A+) are: 1st 3.52:1 2nd 2.22:1 3rd 1.43:1 4th 1:1 Enjoy!

doc u say these shorter gears are for better speed yer? which makes sense. but when i went in my mates 1275 (not sure what it was out of) it revved every gear out WAY further than my 1100 will go. im talking 3rd gear he could take to nearly 100kph (this was a while back so i may be off) but this thing had such long gears, but it pulled SO HARD! im thinking long gears for the a+ metro 1275 i've got? |

Speed in the gears depends on the gear ratios in box, and the diff ratio. I run MK2 S gears in my 1310- with a 3.44 diff. 3rd gear is good for about 90MPH (on speedo) at 7500 rpm. I can get nearly 60 MPH in 2nd, at 8000 rpm... 
But OTOH, by comparison 1098s had pretty short gearing- diffs were either 3.765 or 3.647. Gears (Mini-K or rodchange) were a bit wider spaced. And they only revved to 5500 or so. So, they didn't go real fast in the gears.

Cheers, Mick I';m in for a run in a real Kart..I'v only enjoyed the Hire karts myself  Before I got Marcia it was a toss up between an Mini Van EH Holden Wagon or a real 125 Rotax powered CRG kart.. I went to number of races to watch at Eastern creek and the Gong. I was rite in front of the barrier when that poor girl got killed hiting the barriers...Very sad
