Post subject:  20 Valve in my Mini

Hey All,

Does anyone think that a toyota 20valve engine would fit (with mods obviously) into a mini?

Has anyone tried?

Get back to me.

Into a round nose or a clubman?????. Either or i would say no (not speaking from experience. i have just not read anything to say otherwise).

But if it were possible it would only work in a clubman, and even then i would think that the front would have to be lengthened somewhat to acheive this, due to the size of the powerplant itself :?

Correct me if i'm wrong here people..............

4AGE's have quite large boxes, too big for squeezing into a Mini. 4EFTE's JUST fit, but 4AGE's are just too big. It's no biggy, just go 4#FTE, it's a top engine!

to see if it fits or not just do what i did. take a tape measure to a jap importer and measure the engine dimensions then measure the engine bay. That will give you a rough idea if it will fit or not. Have not seen this conversion done yet, but im running the 4efte and it is making to much power for the chassis on lowish boost, dont think you will need anything more powerfull unless you want to kill yourself.

I thinks theres no way it would fit...its just far too big.

I have one in my daily driver which is much larger the size of the mini and it just sits between its towers nicely...

My advice is if you want a 20 valve find an AE92 or Ae82 and put one in there...they dont weigh much anyway...

Post subject:  Engine Dimension

Mini Clubman Engine bay approx 92 Centimetres. 4EFTE engine 83cms. 4AGE close to 100cms. X does not go into Y. And as Brad said. The 4EFTE is a robust little engine that will produce more than enough power, to the point of being beyond safe. Plus like sticking V8's and the like you have to think about maintaining the handling which is for me is one of the most important aspects. Just my 2c. Also figures are approximate as it was about 6 months ago that I measured everything up.

Thanx guys for all your emails. I was doubtful that it could be done, but just wanted to see what some experienced mini peeps would reckon :)
Anyways I have found a guy who is going to rebuild a 1275 for me into and 1340 (or similar) and build it up nicely for me .... so yeah i think that will be nicer

How do people go about fitting vtec engines then? I would have thought they would have been a silimar size to the 4A series engine.

VTEC motor is freakin' HUGE!
Although there is an urban legend of a VTEC in a stock length roundnose, all the ones I've read about involved lengthening both front guards, which stuffs up the look of the car.

I had a look at the one raced by a certain Mr Borg- it has had all the front end suspension etc completely redesigned. Bugger all Mini bits in there...

I met a dude in Melbourne who is doing a VTEC 1600 in a roundnose van (I think it's Besser on here, but I'm not sure) without lengthening the front, it's really not that much bigger than the 1500 non-VTEC I'm doing. I can even buy a VTEC head for my motor - tho it only VTECs the inlet valves, not the exhausts like a proper VTEC 1600 which was developed later.

I don't think we had VTEC 1600's in Australian delivered cars, only the 1800's - which would be way too big

Post subject:  Thx Simon

yeah the b16a Vtec can fit in the round body front envelope. So saying, you better be ready for some heavy modification to both body and engine. Critical areas I found and am still perfecting:

Inlet manifold
Exhaust manifold
Exhaust
Cooling
gearbox to body clearance
Brakes
Fuel delivery
blah blah...

Not for the faint hearted you see

Tips:
Stand the engine verticle not tilted and solid mount it
Do it in a van and you can run cooling rad under the back floor
Run the fuel system like the 2003 monaros "no return line"
Use Diahatsu disk brakes up front for better thermal mass
drive the Alt on a seperate pulley and mount low

damm I finally think I'll get this money pit running one day!!!!

i saw a vtec mounted in the front of a roundie, the alternator was shaft driven and mounted on the other side of the engine bay, therefore gaining clearence from the front apron.
