Anyone made a serious attempt at rear disk conversion.

I have a set for 12" but looking for a 10" method.

Considering mounting a set of motorbike calipers and disks. Should keep weight down and firm up the pedal.

Any ideas appreciated

With the rear wheels off the ground, either individually or both at the same time  .......rear brakes don't seem to get too much use.....

I would be looking at the best of the drum combinations (Camber Kit, subframe alignment, overhauled swing arm, Minifins, good shoes etc) and spend the time and effort at the other end of your machine...

rather then trying to reduce unsprung weight at the rear, increase the motive power and stopping ability up front :!:

I have also been told an ausmini.com sticker is one of the best rear end mods you can do

Micks 5 cents worth....

KAD do a rear disc setup for mini's. to do rear discs you will have to get an engineer's cert. and they will expect you to do a mechanical handbreake on it as well.... as i said KAD do it, it has a mechanical handbrake, but there not cheap.

Cheers
Aaron

I have a set of KAD rear disc brakes on my mini.
It has to be the best hand brake I have ever used on a mini ,but you can not do hand brake turns with them as the alloy hub does not look to good after you do them.
I can feel the rear brakes working when stopping and it does pull up a lot better with the discs on the back. The cost for the rear KAD discs is around $1500 so they are not cheap...

i agree with the other guy who said to spend money on the fronts and just do up the rear the best you can afford.
ive got metro turbo vented disks on the front with ap racing 4 spots as well and its stops great.
the rear is fully adjustable and im running spacer drums with all new pads ect....
the car stops fine..i dont think it would stop much better with disck on the rear....i would just sped the cash on fixeing the rear like new and spending the $$$ onn getting a good front disck conversion.

well, I believe Besser already has massive front disks (starion?), and a VTEC in the front, so maybe the rear stopping power will be required....

I'm keen to see what you come up with in the mechanical handbrake department, I've been eyeing off small cars with rear disks for my conversion, haven't seen anything I like yet

With all that braking capacity and weight in the front you need even less rear braking. Even if you fit discs back there, they will still do F/all.
Many racers would strip the rear brakes right off, if legal.

If you are losing or wearing out rear brakes you have a major problem.
I sell what i use myself, and at this stage doesn't include rear discs.
Step drums or minifins for me.
I believe they are just wank... yesyou can say i've got 4 wheel discs

Thx Guys,

As Simon mentioned I have plenty of power in the engine and the front brakes are sorted. You can fit bigger front brakes then I have, so now the rear need focusing on.

Ok to clarify, It's going in a van so weight distribution static and dynamic necessitates a performance upgrade in the rear considering payload potential.

I believe hot rods sometimes use a seperate mechanical handbrake so anyone with knowledge would be appreciated.

if you do find something to fit under the 10inch wheels, what sort of dollars would you want for the 12inch setup??

The only setups I have completed are either for 10" or 13"

The 13" brakes I'm not using as they are to big 256mm dia and 24mm thick.

The 10" brakes at just under 8 1/4" dia and 5/8" thick will be on all my cars so when I make em I'll use em.

On the 13's PM me

when I was walking through the carpark at work today I noticed that a V6 mazda tribute has drums on the back...

I reckon I'll put S disks on the back for the wank factor :P

Wouold installing a rear disk brake setup save you any weight? I know that's the purpose of the Super/Minifins but those farkers are damn expensive. Surely you could go and pilfer a set of city brakes and do the Honda conversion on the rear and it would be cheaper?

Rather than doing it for the wank factor you could be doing it to offset the cost of the minifns right? Or at least that's what I'ld be telling people

A lot of the rear weight is in the iron trailing arms..
I doubt discs would be much lighter than drums, by the time you fit adaptor plates, rotors etc.
I reckon Bendix type alloy caliper with the integral handbrake linkage (eg Fiat 125) could be possible. They were used on later cars too.
I doubt you will get anything to fit in 10" wheels though.

Are those 125 calipers opposing piston or piston/claw config?
