Post subject:	Time for a new Engine
With Big dreams of doing more Hillclimbs I decided it was time to build a new engine, and after a couple of years at looking at Ausmini I figured it was time to contribute. So this is my story. I have a 64 850 with a 998 in it now, disks, adjustable front end ect, good solid everyday driver but with a new job came a new car and mini sat in the shed. I did a hillclimb last year and whilst I was the slowest there i had a ball and figured this is what I want to be doing. So began the search for a new engine. After searching Ausmini and Ebay i sourced a 1310, with not many miles, less the head. It has a large journal crank, new pistons, recon gearbox and a mild "versitle" custom grind cam like the Cooper S, so I am told. I pulled it apart and found the gearbox in good condition, and then quickly put a central oil pick up in. The guy who put the pick up in said that all was looking good with the gear box so it assures me that the engine has not gone far. Now comes the good bit. I have just sourced an alloy head. I have read a bit about these and thought that I would give them a try. I got a blank one so i can put bigger valves in. If anyone else has got one of these I would be very interested in seeing the results. anyway that is where I am up to, have not done alot yet but I will keep you all posted

Nice buy....so do you have to put your own valve seats in I would have thought an alloy "performance" head would come with large valve seats anyway

Yeh I got a bare one and will be taking it to a head guy to try and get the biggest valves I can in there. Dr Mini, Have you ever had one of these or had any experiences with one? Also there is the Auto Torque Balancing diff a type of LSD, Have you ever seen them or know anything about them? Thanks Stuart

He knows a bit about these heads.

I know that Quaife make an ATB diff, in my opinion an ATB is better than a standard LSD because it doesn't lock suddenly like some LSD's do. This helps to prevent the possible wrist breaking torque steer in high ouput engines... The down side is they are a lot more expensive. Quaife's website is http://www.quaife.co.uk/ a very good manufacturer apparently (NB: I have never dealt with them). Hope this helps

I have now fitted the engine with the following goodies - The head as previously mentioned and flowed at 126hp - The atb diff - Minisport roller rockers - 10:1 comp ratio Have a look at the pictures, over the next few weekends I should have the carbies ready to go.

That head looks great and the flow figure is impressive . Any reason you haven't fitted the extra head studs since the heads drilled for it ?

Oooooh! Me like! Any reason you're still running with the original fan? Changing to a thermo fan is high on my To Do list.

Keep an eye on those roller rockers, I have seen that brand of rollers get flats on em (so useless) in 10,000km. They might be better made now but watch it.

No Reason I have not changed the fan, just thought that one would be ok. In relation to the extra head studs, they are not drilled the whole way. My block does not have them so I didnt drill them through. Thanks for the tip on the rockers. We will see how they go. hopefully they hold out. Here are some more pictures.

Looking good. Couple of things to check. Do you know what your compression ratio will be with those combustion chambers? They look a bit bigger than std S which were around 21 cc. Are the pistons flush with the deck? Also, with the 1.5 rockers, have you checked your valve springs will handle the total lift? You do not want them to be coil bound.
