Post subject:  Tyres Which Ones??

Hi Guys, I have a Mk2 Cooper S, I'm looking at putting WIDER tyres on it, I think at present it has 4.5in x 10. Im looking at 5.5 x 10 or 6x 10?

Will 5.5 and 6in fit under the Cooper S Flare kits, and what experience have you had fitting 6in, are they too wide????

Cheers Andre

It depends on the wheel's off set.

I doubt a 10x6 would fit without sticking out. It all depends of how much it sticks out to how likely you are to get caught.

For stock flares, rear step drums and front disc brakes, I'd go 10x5 with 175/60/10 tyres, and get Dunlop D93J tyres.

I have 10x6 minators on my car, didn't have an 'issues' fitting them.
But every car is different.

Hi there, we need to know what size rims you have, generally the width in inches will be stamped somewhere on them if alloys - or post a pic if they are the original steelies? do they have 10 round holes in them?

Tires aren't measured in inches, they go by mm, usually 10" rims are 165's for the street and there isn't much else that i know of.

I think the only option available to go wider is if you have 145's on it currently for some reason. Have a look at you're tire and on the sidewall you should be able to get some numbers like 165/70R10 or something similar.

165 means it's 165mm wide (6.5inches)

70 means the height of the sidewall is 70% of the width (0.7 x 165 = 115mm) so 4.5" high.

and the R is the rim size - 10"

Hope that helps..

There is a big tire selection guide on here..

A local guy up here has 10x6 mambas with tyres to suit a 5 inch wheel on his cooper S and they work well.
Because the tyre is "stretched" on to the rim it gives an optical illusion that the cooper S flairs cover the wheels, when actually the wheels stick out an inch past the flairs. Possibly not legal but it works fine

Andre, your wheels are 5" Contessa's with 165/70/10 tyres, Falken's I think. Your choices in wheels will be either 5" or 6", just need to decide on your preferred style of wheel. Dunlop Formula R DJ93 would be OK. That is what I run on my S, tho I don't drive it usually in the rain!

A wider tire wont give you any more grip in the wet - in fact it will give you less as it is more prone to aqua plane.

The falkens are your problem here, they are terrible in the wet.

Get some A008's or if you want to spend more money you'll get better results with an R compound tire from dunlop or yokohama.
