Post subject:  diff ratios + early gearsets

Hello all,

I have done a search but can't seem to find much on this one. What diff ratios are interchangeable? I know that both pinion and diff gear need to be kept as a pair so will all A series diff ratio's fit into other A series?
And also what about an A+ into A series?

Cheers,
Alex

They all will fit if kept as sets, whether A series or A+.

Wow thats handy to know,
So every diff set will fit every diff.
Does anyone change their diff over when they go for a long highway trip as opposed to usual driving, or is it just way too much work? Anyone got an approximate time frame once you become practiced?

And going off topic... Are the early gearbox parts interchangeable? In that will the parts from a early 3 synchro box fit into a 850 3 synchro?
Where I am trying to go is I want to keep the pudding stirrer but want better gears :) what would anyone suggest looking into?

Cheers,
Alex

NO, the motor has to come out. Why bother... just fit earplugs like I do. 8)

all the 3 synchro Mini boxes have the same crap ratios except the Cooper and Cooper S. I doubt you would find a Cooper gearset these days.
Fit a 4 synchro remote box, and use your diff housing and shifter. Easy mod.
Just need to check the bearing bores are right size and round, when bolted up. Remove the 2 dowel pins if you have to.

Cheers,
Alex

Thats exactly what I am doing - 1st attempt with a 3 synchro box was a perfect match but the gears were shot so 2nd attempt with a 4 synchro box is pretty dam near but will need the dowels out

huh thats another handy thing to know.
So I will have to get hold of a 4 synchro Mk2 s box
Are there many of these around? At a guess I would say they are pretty sought after?
Or are the repro parts available?

Apart from Mk2 S and Clubby GT, the 4 synchro remote boxes were used in Mini K, then Clubby 1098. Also in many Mokes and vans, 1968-73. Still are quite common.
