What`s with a blinky-winky high tech damper indicator?

is anyone familiar with GR's tool he uses for measuring how far the piston in the dashpot lifts at different RPM. There is a photo of it in TME, as part of his small bore build, and there is also a photo of the one Vizard uses in the big yellow book, but no details on what is actually required. From the photos, and my imagination, I expect it is just a piece of alloy tube with some markings on it, that slips into the top of the piston where the damper rod & sleeve would normally go..... However, I wonder what needs to be done about the weight of the tube sitting in it, whether it makes any difference that the tube is 'heavier' than the damper effect of the oil going through the damper sleeve at the end of the rod any ideas? anyone got one of their own? I want one to use with my mates gas analyser to work out the right needles for my new motor, but he reckons I need to modify a carb to do it, I reckon I don't |

Another dampener with another hole drilled into it with a piece of coat-hanger wire with a sieres of different colours painted on it that`s what i use Bonnet off & go for a spin watch the pretty colours rise & see where it gets to at what revs easy-peasy |

bloody good idea that SPLOD.... I'll have a think about how I could make one that does fit under the bonnet - permanent flashy lights on the dashboard! nice practical idea with the wire Matt - I'll probably do that

I use my ancient "PSW Tool" , it came in this groovy little vynil ouch with instructions . Basically it's two alloy tubes that have been turned down on a lathe the snugly fit in the top of the pistons and two bent wires for the tops of the tubes . You set it up so the two wires are almost touching and watch what they do . You can also then set a scale behind them if you want to see how high etc . The kit also has another tube which is oval in profile on one end and is used for setting float height and the other end for centering the jet .

they're a very neat little setup Ian, quaint in fact 
looks like they've sat in their packet on a shelf for years by that lovely 'tan (dust) line' across the bottom. That's what I was thinking with a machined tube how does the float height one work? |

I'll scan the instructions tomorrow and email them to you Simon , it's basically just a bit of the same size alluminium squashed slightly into an oval and goes between the float and the arm from memory . |

I've got a set as well. Much easier to check the mixture than trying to press the piston lift pins. Just lift the tube the width of the wire pointer. Had mine for 30+years but its not as pristine as the one in the pics. RonR |
