Post subject:  Bonnet Tiedown and Fire Extinguisher
What's the best and cheapest bonnet tiedown, I'd like to go into a motorsport event and I think I need this. I'm keen to just use a leather belt but where do I loop it through.

I also want to put my fire extinguisher from my last (sold) car into the mini, I made a custom bracket last time and put it in the seat brackets (where the seat bolts onto the rails). What's the best way to mount it, preferably without drilling the body of the car so I leave no marks when removed.

I bought the MiniSpares leather belts. They work but are pretty poorly made. Revolution Racegear sell similar ones, maybe better, go take a look. They've got rubber hook ones too.

I pop rivetted mine to the moustache, they look neater that way.

I've got your problem with the extinguisher. It's bolted to the passengers seat frame, but thats no good when I leave the seat out on track days...

Good idea, but not needed at Wakefield, it's a private (ie not CAMS controlled) track.

Anyhow my Dellorto has 2- one internal, and the external one! :lol:

I'll fit another one when I get my 2s licence... :wink:

Really, what are "accelerator return springs". I was only going in a Motorkhana but it''s run by the Porsche club and is CAMS and requires a 2S lience (I already got that from when I raced the WRX).

We only needed bonnet tiedowns and fire extinguishers (that's where I mounted it on the seat with a piece of aluminimum between the 2 front bolts holding the seat down), and contact over all forward facing lights (at least for the sprints).

I'm planing on enter the WRX club championship (well at least the motorkhana) and give a bit to my old rivals. :)

the spring in question,that isnt the 1 that is bolted to the manifold is it?or is it a difftent item?

It's the spring that pulls the cable back when you get off the throttle.
Depends what carb(s) you got. On an 850 or early 998/1098 it's attached to a bracket on the ex pipe clamp, on a late 998 it's on the cable anchor bracket under the carb.

Cooper & S have 3 springs already, so maybe OK... :wink:

If you want a really cheap option for bonnet tie downs you can use an octopus strap from one side of the botom of the grill, run over the latch and down to the other side of the grill. It works, passes scrutineering and leaves no permanant holes.

I have mounted Fire extinguishers brackets with zip ties before but not sure if this would pass close inspection by the scruitneers.

When mounting fire extinguishers in Race cars be CAREFULL!

We all tend to look at things with road driving in mind but race cars need different standards. When mounting the extinguisher imagine the force of the Mini coming down ON ITS ROOF and the subsequent forces that will be applied to the extinguisher and mount.

Extinguishers have to weigh 900g plus by the regulations and if they were to come loose in a rolling car they could hit you! :shock:

I recommend NEVER using the plastic brackets supplied with certain extinguishers. Always mount away from the driver and in front of him. The passenger footwell is the best place and I recommend two nuts and bolts through the floor panel. Do not use self tappers as they can rip out.

If you are worried about holes have you considered leaving the extinguisher in the car on the road? Its the first item I fit whenever I buy an old car. They generally sit well just in front of the passenger seat out of the way. You never know when you will need it.

Also never buy extinguishers from race shops! They are the same specification as the ones at Kmart. Revolution racegear sells the extinguisher I run for around $45 but Kmart has them on special every few months for $20.

Yeah I had to do a bit of hunting to find one with a metal bracket for that exact reason. My advise from when I fitted mine is to triple check where your drilling. I mounted mine in front of the passengers seat through the floor and came within millimetres of drilling through the fuel hose! My car has the hydro/brake/fuel hoses running open under the floorpan, it doesn't have channels (can't think why, it should have).

I purchased mine from supercra..crap auto.. was $18 on sale.. normally $26-$28... its correct size, correct weight, steel/tin holder-er
