That's one of the very late mini engines which left the factory like that , I think it was called a spark pack but not sure , basically a snazzy computer engine management system .

You need an electronic crank pick up and a coil pack. do a search for EDIS and you should see examples of home made jobbies.

For completeness click here for a good thread on this topic...[/url]

Is it possible to knock up your own efi set up from bits and pieces that one might find at a local wreckers?

I have came across a few DIY EFI sites on the net and I reakon if I put my mind to it I could grasp the concept of how it all works.

If I was able to understand it could it be done?

Just putting it out there

?

If you're considering EFI for a 5-port, I'd be very wary, as it's not as simple as it might seem.

similar to what a commodore uses "coil packs" that are program to spark at certain strokes.

Ok, depending on what type of system you plan on using ( I like the MegaJolt/Squirt ) you run a toothed trigger wheel ( with one tooth missing ) off your crank pulley, with a sensor mounted off it that 'senses' when the missing tooth comes round, which tells the MJ, 'Hey! Spark now plz!' :D Well that's the gist of it

There are other ways of doing it, like running a hall effect sensor inside the dizzy ( you pull out all the points, etc )

Just as an offshoot to the topic , there was a UK company selling a vehicle electrics recovery kit to use when everything shat itself . It came with the coil packs etc , crank angle sensor , control box and you had to choose between a 4 , 6 or 8 cylinder version , they weren't multi-fit . You fitted the crank angle sensor with double sided tape on the timing cover and put the (single) trigger on the back of the bottom pulley , calculated the diameter of the pulley and chose the "close enough setting" on the box . Apparently it took a few cranks for the box to decide where the motor was in respect to rpm and then started sparking . You could then turn a screw top move the timing through 360 degrees to get it close enough to run .....

Basically it would have been like using a BFH to crack an egg and the timing could be a bit variable but it would get you home on that god awful wet night . I only saw them advertised for a year or so but and have never seen them again so presume they were a flop .

FWIW:

Whether or not that is a coilpack engine in the image on the book I don't know, but I'd say it is not. Coilpack engines have the oil filter where the dizzy sat. Neither are really shown clearly on the cover, but it looks more like a dizzy to me.
:D

Just to play the smart-ass:
The Vizard engine is a "standart" carb-engine with distributorless ignition system.

(You can divine the crank sensor at height of the "Marina" lettering)

The late Rover MPI engines had an sensor at the flywheel and cam (were previously the mech. fuel pump sat).
The block & head are different to usual A-Series:

And fully assembled:

Ask "KLAS" - he has some experience in distributorless ignition-system and Mini engines. And with injecting 5 port engines too (hey - even the blokes in England managed to fuel inject A-Series engines  )

No worries , good to get the right info , good to see the shot's of the late mini engine as well .

:)

They are very uncommon in Australia, I'm guessing?
Here's another shot showing it in situ with the front rad:

I had a short flick through the Vizard book:
He uses a programmable MOTECH ignition system.
(Google doesn't show usefull results, thought)

Here's ashot of the crank trigger:

Pretty right there. There are not many of the british MPI minis out here, to the best of my knowledge you could count them on both hands.
There are more of the japanese versions though. Same distributorless block, but they
left the jap cars as SPI, and the radiator in the stock position.
Since the AC compressor sits under the alternator, there's no room for a front mount radiator.
