Mate, for starters , send your cam up to Graeme Russell and get him to reprofile it for you, not only will you get one of the best cams around it won't cost you anywere near as much as one of those pommy cams....

Hey My 998 has to come out due to low oil pressure and crunchy second gear. has not had a rebuild for around 8 years (bottom end/box) Should I strip it down for a full rebuild. or just fix whats broken. Its not Smokey I want to change my cam, to try and give me a little more go, its got a waggot 240 atm, any suggestions? thanks |

Whilst its apart, check over everything and replace whats stuffed. If block bore has exessive wear, give is a re-bore and new slugs and rings. Make sure you remove all oil gallery plugs and give it a good clean / dip to rid of all that old built up oil sludge. Gearbox, well ur up for a rebuilt either way with that crunchy second gear. U can by rebuilt kits with all new bearings, layshaft, gaskets, baulk rings an so on pretty cheap these days. Dont penny pinch and get / do a half ass job or else it will come back and bite u in the backside! |

who makes the best rebuild kits? I may change the diff while its apart also. and as for the cam, I may have someone who will swap my waggot for another one so ill see how that goes. |

Don't go nuts fitting a hot cam to the motor if you aren't going to rebuild it. Although it isn't smokey now, it probably will be once you start bolting go faster bits to it. |

the motor has already been rebuilt to suit extra power, and revs quite well around 6-7000 rpm. It never ends, I have to work out what carb Im going to use, a 40mm webber or a 1.5 su. |

the motor has changed hands at least 3 times, so I have no idea how many kms. but it still goes fine, just the oil pressure sometimes gets a bit low on idle. oh and the relief valve thing, god im always having to change it, it keeps getting seized. |

Well, I still stand by my comments. If you want to work this engine a bit, and you have it apart anyway, at least look at a basic rebuild. It is better economy in the long term. And I would be concerned about that relief valve - I've never had one sieze, so if yours is doing it often, there is obviously a problem that needs sorting. |

Im going to ditch the relief valve and try a cv ball bearing. could bits of seccond gear be getting into it and causing it to get stuck? |

I wouldn't think so. If any of your second gear had broken off (which is unlikely) then it should get stopped by the oil pickup strainer. I had an idler gear bearing self destruct, filled my sump with metal filings, but luckily none found their way into the engine proper.
