Post subject:  Gemini Starter issue

Hi guys
My starter just ticks once when I turn the key. I can operate the starter with a shifter across the terminals but it will not fire via the key.

I am assuming its the solenoid, is there anything I can service or do I just need to mod another starter motor?

thanks guys

Put a screwdriver from the power cable to the spade lug, if it starts you have a wiring issue from your ignition switch.
If not, it's probably the solenoid. These can be replaced without stripping the starter.

I tried that kev and it still didnt start.

Since its still there could I just put the wire from the spade on the starter back onto the Mini solenoid and then run the heavy cable from the mini solenoid to the other terminal on the starter as per normal mini starter motor?

That might spin the starter but it won't engage the pinion.
Gemini starter is pre-engaged, that means the solenoid first engages the pinion with the ring gear, THEN spins the starter...

Just go get another Solenoid. They're easy to fit.

Just a though, would it be possible to rewire it as per original but split the thin wire so that it activates the regular solenoid plus the gemini one?

Yes you can do it. But be warned that you then have twice as many things to go wrong.

I have tried doing it the way I mentioned and it works ok. The only thing is that the starter stays on until I pull the wire off the solenoid. So I can activate it wth the key, but it will not disengage....

weird huh, I am guessing this is just stemming from what ever the original problem is?
