This is a steam pipe manifold made in Sydney for a turbo 998 project. Unfortunately its not the most free flowing design :( but every alternative I threw at them another negative appeared. In the end I conceeded that there was very little alternative to the end product considering the length of the Turbo (GT 2554 Ball bearing) which believe it all not they use this exact turbo on 800cc quad bikes (so I'm told) and the fact its going into a round nose. Any views or critisms on the end result? Ultimately I guess the dyno will tell of its effectiveness, though the bloke who made it said he'll make another one (another design) for free if the figures aren't up where they should be. It's going to be a long wait though the speed this projects going!!! :oops:

I've seen much worse, for example the original Metro turbo one... :lol:
Looks OK shape to me, and a neater job than most. :wink:

Agreed, for all intensive purposes I think it would be quite adequate.
You can get very carried away with ex. manifolds for turbo cars, and for lots and lots more time, would you get that back in end difference?
You have to ask yourself this question.

Yeah there's nothing wrong with the workmanship of the manifold (its actually very well made) it was only the lack of free flowing curves that concerned me. Its a battle of balance I guess, you make longer separate pipes, more heat is lost and the gas travels further, but has a lot smoother journey than something that is shorter with brutal turns. In away the space dictated which option was chosen. Thanks for your input :D

What boost will you be running, and what compression?

Boost will be up around 15psi and compression 9-1. It will be running a Plazmaman W2A intercooler which is rated well above any horsepower figure this engine will ever produce, but is the smallest one they have (they're worth a look, in my opinion they far outclass PWR barrels). The radiator for the intercooler will have to mounted in the boot. It has to run a megajolt system as there's no room to keep the dizzy and the alternator will have to be dropped down an inch or so. This has to happen due to the intercooler placement infront of the engine. Horse power figure? GR seems to believe 150hp will be achieved with out to much drama :D

Hey - Where you located? Sydney?
The 2554R-2 that you have is run on Quad bikes and racing Jet skis... problem is, the turbine housing design is alot longer. Its actually longer that a standard 2554R. The big difference though is that your A/R on the turbine AND compressor is quote different to the stock 2554R (yours is alot smaller) and will spool up much quicker... but still have heaps of flow to take it through 8000rpm.

The manifold is fine - yes you could have tried individual runners, etc but in a roundie and the size of your pipes (imho too big) I dont think you would have room.

Where does the oil feed for the turbo go? Looks like you have it rotated and feed on the side?
Good luck with bleeding the clutch mate - my turbo is in the same place - cant run the clutch arm return spring or bleed it - well, can bleed it with extended modified setup ;)

I reckon on 15psi of boost you should see 150hp also...
Who's building it? Tell us more about the specs of the motor...
ie/ What pistons, rods, etc?
Graham doing the cam and head for you?
Is that an RE7 intake I see under there??? Wouldnt think that would fit a roundie!
You going to run the stock Metro turbo inlet, carb and plenum?

I love turbo projects! :D

I'd be happy with that, it looks pretty good to me 8) There's nothing wrong with a log style manifold.. sure it's not the 'best' design for power but a carbied 5-port motor isn't exactly the 'best' design for power either :P

I say scrap the head and manifold and buy one of Matts turbo kits :D

That manifold looks ok, but not great, eg. the pipe diameter is the same the whole way, which isn't best but as said it should be good enough.

On another note, how much did that turbo set you back? if you don't mind me asking.

And yes, what carby are you running/planning to run?

And I want to hear more about the intercooler setup, I'm guessing W2A means water to air?

Also is that manifold ceramic coated?

First of all Pete I'm located in Penrith, but the vehicle is in Moorebank. GR should have the head finished next week (202) and the specs will pretty much be left to him (also doing the engine) I have a metro carb, plen and it will be running GR manifold (no it doesn't even come close to not hitting the fire wall :( ). The turbo has the oil feed located in the top position (just must be the photo) and as you stated its exhaust housing design makes it much longer than other 2554's, though it does give the exhaust a nice clean exit. I fear you may be right in regards to pipe size, it's 1 1/4 (ID) first bend from the head and then to 1 1/2". I wanted the further most port to stay 1 1/4' until just before meeting 2 and 3. It amazes me that you explain things in detail and people nod and agree that they understand what your say and then do there own thing thinking (well thats what they say) they're doing you a favour :evil:

Alex turbo cost me $1300 from GCG in Sydney and if I had known Matt was to reach where he has so soon I would have chosen that path (any one wish to buy a 5 port turbo set up :lol: ) the manifolds not ceremic coated yet but will be. The PLAZMAMAN inter cooler (yes water to air) is just like the PWR barrels but square which increases their efficency dramtically they have a web sit and another gentleman on this site is running one with a starlet conversion thats actually where I heard of them) The radiator for the intercooler as stated will be positioned in the boot (thats the plan at the moment) and is rated to cool 320HP. Hopefully some of the mounting idea's that I have will pan out, as there isn't to many other option for me.

That looks to be good log style manifold. The aim is to keep all the lengths as short as possible. The diameter looks right too.

Long gently curving bends are nice, but are really only important if you are going for an equal length runner type manifold. Have yet to make up alog manifold, but from my reading your fabricator seems to be on the ball.

good to see another small bore turbo - where in moorebank is the car? PM me if you dont want everyone to know the location.

I own the starlet conversion running the plazmaman cooler, i have the radiator for it under the passenger front guard and can remove the headlight when i felt like i need any extra cooling..

Appreciate the offers of help and I dare say I may need to take some of you up on it one day :D . I pretty much owe the small amount of knowledge in regards to mini's to the members of this forum and though I don't often post, gain heaps from other peoples input.

Mini Mad the cars stored along Nuwarra Rd above where the old Brick Works (no pun actually intended :wink: ) used to be and by the way thanks for posting the information about the Plazmaman I would never have known they existed!!! :D

Pete I forgot to say that I don't believe (but I'll have to check) that the turbo location will effect any clutch operation, in regards to the mechanical side, but as I said my actual hands on experience with these cars is very limmited (here's hoping not :oops: )
