I know people have said that if you are expecting to turn some high revs then you should get the buttons instead of circlips.
My question is why do GR (small bore) flat tops come with circlips and not the buttons?
Are these better circlips or should I still get the buttons?

Graham uses circlips for roady motors, if anybody wants/needs Teflon buttons (mainly for racing) he makes em. Circlips are OK to 8000, if fitted right.

There is a right and wrong way to fit circlips, they should be installed with the rounded edge inwards.
Having had a circlip come out once and trash my 1220 engine, I still like buttons on smallbores, if it's going to get a big rev.

Ok, sounds like I'll get some buttons just to be safe.
Graham is grinding an RE13 for me so I'll get him to send them with it.

I'm guessing to install the buttons you just push them into the bore until they click into the groove?
And if you need to, how do you get them back out?

The buttons should fit into the gudgeon pin, and have running clearance against the bore.

The buttons look like a bolt with the head turned down, and the end is spherical.
As justminis says there is some clearance to the bore.

To get them out you can just tap the 2 buttons and the pin through the piston & rod.
