ausmini :: View topic - What engine oil & visco do you use on your 1275 engine ?

I hate to rain on the penrite brigade but about 2 years ago they stared adding friction modifiers to there oils (same as GTX did many tears ago), the only rason for doing this is that they have stared using a lesser quality base oil to start with, castro; did it in when they could not het decent oil during the oil crisis hence the name change to GTX2.

friction modifiers cause the oil to break down more quickly under extreme heat and loose oil pressure and one of the major draw backs of the oil is that it reduces the ability of the oil to cling to roller or ball type bearings(just like in a mini gearbox)

penrite do make a classic type oil but it is dearer because they have to use a better base oil which costs more to start with, just like castrol do with the edge range hence the dearer price

Olive oil is much healthier. 20w50 is the stuff. KMX oil from KMart is the choice oil around here. CHEAP, too! You don't want your newer synthetic stuff. The older type of oil is best for a Mini. SF or SG... and could just get away with SJ. What S* rating is KMX? I can't remember off the top of my head. I think it's SG??

depends entirely on your circumstances. some friends of mine (I did have some once) drove an 850 across the Nullabour in summer when the road was still dirt. By the time they got to Augusta, they were topping up the motor with EP90................... A little slop in the bearings & rings, but otherwise fine

KMX 20W/50. 6L for under 20 bux. It's an SF oil. I used to use Castrol's GP50, then Formula R 25W/50, then Edge Sport 25W/50 (all 3 are the same oil really). But the price keeps going up to pay for the Castrol Marketing Machine.

Penrite HPR30 and HPR30GAS.

I can vouch for HPR30, but it's not cheap. I think it's usually cheaper than Castrol Edge Sport and probably as good quality, but I've never used Edge Sport. I got a few bottles of HPR30 for around $18 each a year ago and after using them all up I went to what happened to be cheap, Castrol GTX2 20w/50. And it's not nearly as good. It tends to lose oil pressure when hot a lot more than the HPR30. But I guess it gives me a good reason not to drive my Mini in 38 degree + days and drive the Merc.

I gave up using HPR30 , as at track days the oil viscosity went south when hot, just like GTX. Also, it used to get a burnt sludgy smell to it long before 1500mile oilchange, even though the rings etc in motor were fine. GR doesn't like it either, says it breaks down sooner than most.

I have also used PENRITE HPR30GAS and found it works quite well especially when the engine is under constant load conditions and high temps. Poeee check the sticker on your "LS", drivers quater vent.
