Post subject:  Crossflow 8-port Vs good 5-port

I was wondering is ther any/much benfit of an 8-port cross flow (eg westlake) compared against a 5-port worked by GR??
IM just thinking about my options, If i could find a cross flow it would be for a largebore stroker motor.

Just wasnt sure about the advantage (i mean in approx HP increase airflow etc)

Thanks all
Brenton

mostly in the hip pocket.... even if you could find a weslake head.

There have been quite a few threads on this, search weslake, arden, etc.
The general consensus is that they will out perform the 5 port head but the cost of setting one up is pretty high. I think they start at around $2000 for the casting, then you need to add machining, valves, etc.

Try $5000 all up, IF you can source any

Pretty sure the Elder 8 port alloy one is still available, check with Graham Russell. About $4K (+ labour) fitted, + carbs or injection.
8 port will give better midrange torque than 5 port, at same max HP tuning level.

Would love to try one out. And they have a classic works feel about them.

I'll wait till uni is finished before I try that one on the missus however...

something seriously cool about opening up the bonnet of a classy mini and seeing a crossflow on there, looking like it was done at Abingdon

it's great looking at the motors of the NSW super-minis

hee hee,,, yeah don`t we all :-)

But,,, in all seriousness,,, the question is about an 8 port vs a good 5 port,,, well i have to say that it`s very hard for a good 4 port to beat a good 8 port on the track,,, mid range & upper end (because of that wonderfull mid range) is just very hard to beat,,, but i`ve seen some "not so good" 8 ports too

so,,, "Good" 5 port against a "Good" 8 port,,, well the 8 port wins all day every day & especially sunday & then sells on monday :-) (sorry ,,, old adverts stick in my head) :-)

thankyou Matt thats exactly what i wanted to know..

I didnt realise that the westlakes were as rare as they were (i read some old posts), hmmm there goes that idea - maybe consider 7 ports now

Rumour has it that the porting on the AKM 7 port is not the best. The Weber carbs bolt straight to the head and although the intake holes are big, the port shape is not great.
I'd dig a little deeper into this before I bought one...

OTOH, apparently this alloy `Weslake 8 port copy' head is da bomb, but supply is a problem...

Did you know abput the experimental 'HEMI' crossflow head by BMC/BL?

It's a real crossflow head, as the valves sit in line and not side by side.
Plus the hemispherical combustion chamber should give some improvements.

It was made at the time production of the Cooper 'S' came to an end but found to be too expensive. Intended for use with a 998, but from the looks of it never ran.
