Post subject:  oil jets/ squirters to cool piston crowns??

hi, im building a high hp A+ Metro turbo engine, and i was reading in the yellow vizard bible (pg354) that it is possible to drill main bearing webs, in such an arangement, to acheive piston cooling jets,
my question is, has anyone actualy tried this before on their A series??, and will this effect the oil suply to the main bearings?
Will the oil control ring be able to cope with the excess oil?
Even though i have a metro oil pump, will it be able to supply the added volume of oil, given that it is also feeding the turbo??
finaly... is there any real benifit in doing this mod, considering it would take quite alot of machining ect ect to make it work...., if you look at most modern turbo petrol, or diesel engines today, just about all of them have piston cooling??

sorry about the long winded questions, but this has been something i have been thinking about for some time!!

Hi, Check out this web site.

http://www.turbo-mini.com/4598.html

Great info on building a high powered Turbo engine.

And it includes under crown oil cooling jets

The Vizard book is 20+ years old and needless to say, 20 years of development has happened since his book. Some of the boys on here are running very high powered turbo engines and I am sure some are not running jet arrangements. You may want to do a search and have a chat to these people first before going to the trouble of doing this

Most of the turbo mini guys with high boost/high power run under crown oil jets, mostly the Ford ones as they're cheap & easy to get.

Lots more reading & pics here:

i got mine from a toyota of some sort,,, ford Ztec have them, some Bimnmers have them,,, etc etc etc ... have a run around your local wrecking yard & ask to see some exploded-blown up-dissmantled engines that will be scrap & you`ll probably get them given to you

mostly fit with a banjo bolt so only a small drill hole (x4) & then tap a thread (x4) add 2x copper washers per jet assy , set the direction & angle of squirt/spray with the fine tube before tightening & away you go

Normally won`t cause "Too" much of a drop in over-all oil pressure but careful as some jets have bigger holes in the ends & may need a bit more of a squash

& yes Turbominis.co.uk is an excellent site for just this topic

thanks all for steering me in the right dirrection,
i checked out the bmw ones,here..http://www.minifreunde.at/harry/links/block.htm that have a check valve built in, so you can keep good oil pressure at idle, and the hole size is about half that of a zetec one. this might be the go.

4AGE engines have 'em

Wouldn't it be better to have 8, an extra one on each piston to get the other side of the piston crown? Or is that overkill?

yeah i was thinking the same, on the big diesels that i work on, the piston is designed with a cut out and a hole in which oil is directed up into the centre of the crown, saying that though if you look at the bmw ones in the picture, the oil stream will be constant, and as the piston moves up and down you would think there would be a fair amount of oil being shot up there, surly it would splash up and around the little end??

I asked this to GR and he says there is no need, the gearbox throws more than enough oil up there.

Ah,,, not with a decent windage tray it won`t

horses for courses & just an example of what i`ve said in the "Isn`t it funny" thread

not picking on anyone,,, just meaning to sort all the relevent information for as many of the differing circumstances we are confronted with

:-)

sorry,,, i`m dribbling again/still

back to fixing Matty (Fijis) clutch :-)

Windage trays are good on race motors, "they keep broken engine bits out of the gearbox".

Ahh yes but i didn't go about stating they are not required. I presented the source and proposed it as another point of view.

Not everyone is right this is why we discuss and learn ;)
