Post subject:  Disc Brake Conversions
As a new member I realise this must have been covered many times. I have trawled the forum reading many of the posts on the topic. It would appear that the options for upgrading from drums to discs are:

7.5” Cooper S
8.4” Late model Rover or
9.1” Honda Civic or similar

Options are dependant on wheel size, I plan on using either 12’ or 13” wheels.

It has been a few years since the Honda discs topic was discussed, has much changed or are there other late model option conversions, preferably with out the need to use wheel spacers (obviously illegal in NSW, I guess so are many other modifications) although the big advantage is that you can use existing drum hubs etc.

From those who have undertaken a conversion to discs other than the 7.5” or 8.4” mini option, was it worth the effort (ie fabricating brackets etc) & what sort of costs were involved considering a new set of 7.5” are about $1600 & $1300-1900 for reconditioned or new 8.4”

If you can do all the mods your self it may be cheaper all up but if you have to pay someone to machine parts and make the brackets plus some custom brake hoses and mod plates etc etc it may be easier or cheaper to just go mini.

Are Metro disks common in Aus? I bought an Austin Metro for the engine and brakes (NZ$600), as it had 4 pot vented brakes. You can use the hubs so need to get disk hubs from the UK and there's a brake line kit you need as well to convert it to a single line set-up but as it uses all mini parts with no modification, it's pretty acceptable to engineers and other concerned parties.

Although the metro hub will fit, it will change the suspension geometry and the general consensus is that the handling of the car will suffer possibly to the point where it becomes dangerous if the lower suspension arms aret changed to correct things.

Metro hubs are usable, providing that you use MK1 Metro ball joints with them (Mk2 Metro ball joints don`t fit the mini arms), & its best to set it all up with adjustable lower control arms & adjustable tie bars to position the lower ball joint in a better place for both camber & caster angles, then re-set the toe/tracking adjustment after that.

I'd go for a NEW set of 7.5's or a decent 2nd had set of 8.4's from a Japanese Rover.

If you're set on 12s or 13s, get 8.4 inch discs...

There's no real need to go any further in most street minis.

i went from songle leading shoe to 8.4"disks,

i did notice a slight difference after that :D and by slight i mean huge

got a set of recoed disks with hubs,drive shafts etc for $1600,

and a set of wide drums for the rear

running 13" wheels

does anyone know how metro 4 pot set up is made to fit 10" wheels
I read about it in the UK magazines how they have machined the discs & calliper to fit, but cant understand how the calliper can be made to fit

Do they just space out the wheel to clear & lightly trim the calliper for clearance?

New caliper mounting bracket and some grinding of the caliper itself.
Not really recommended.

i have an 850 with 10" jelly bean mags and i want to upgrade to discs do i need to change my wheels for bigger ones.
