I was thinking of making a helicol idler gear with timkin bearings like the link below but helicol out of an existing gear Purpose to eliminate the idler washers So what do you think ![]() Kiwiinwgtn |

Ah, you want one like this then? ![]() (this one belongs to justminis). KG Engineering in Melbourne made it. Company now gone kaput, but hey, it's possible to do. I suspect they made a new gear though, not machined out an existing idler. |

Hi Kev Yep, thats the one I need to pull my engine down to re do the seals and repaint after the fire so i thought while its apart i would make some improvements. Has any one tried the gears any issues Cheers Bernard |

Hi Bernard KG did make a new gear for that set up. My first attempt (1990) was with an original gear machined to suit the timken set up. It worked under a 1380 for quite a while but the centre step in the gear for the bearing races was too thin (my bad) and did break. The KG gear has a substantial centre step. While I have not done another original gear, believe it is entirely possible to use an original gear provided the centre step is sufficient. Steve |

The other alternative is to use a std gear and shaft. Machine the shaft down to 5/8" and fit the taper roller outers to the caseings. The brg in the flywheel side is in a fixed postion but the one in the gear box case has 3 5mm grub screws that push on the outer to give the correct pre-load for the brgs.. With the brgs further apart the whole assembly will take more load and the brgs have less twisting load on them. |
