Post subject:  5 Speed mini gearbox

I'm looking at biting the bullet and getting a 5 speed gearbox for my mini .
The minispares 5 speed gearboxes come in straight cut(MSG07) or the hellical cut (MSG05) - Does anyone know what would be the better gearbox to go for ? and does the straight cut really make that much more noise over the hellical cut gearbox?

It is a 5 week wait to get the gearbox as they are made up in lots of ten gearboxes at a time ..
It's a little bit cheaper with the 15% off at the mo and the dollar is good to the GBP.

Shipping is 150GBP.

Are those kits just for the cogs? Meaning they would have to be installed into a box here? Or is it for the whole thing as the picture shows, ready to bolt to the bum of your block?

Looks to me to be the whole unit, assembled..

If I had a spare $3500, I know where I'd be spending it ;)

Casino? so you can double or even triple it?

Wouldnt a better option be to buy the gears and save hugely on postage and get them fitted over here?

Would that be on a 5 speed box or on an elder 7 port head?

I like the fact that the 5th gear on these is a true overdrive, some of the other 5 speed units, 5th is a 1:1 so just like a 4 speed.

I don't have one but am interested in others experience with them.

Oooh, seen the exchange rate today $1 AUD = 0.51 GBP. When does that 15% discount finish again?

I'm pretty sure the casing requires significant modifications to fit the gears...

if I had a dollar for every time I got on the freeway and reached for a 5th gear, I could afford one of those boxes....

When i was at IMM and talking to the lads at minispares they told me the box requires machining to fit the 5th gear.

As for noise i was told the striaght cut gears are not too noisy by them selves. It is the drop gears that make them incredibly noisy to which some people said "dont bother with a radio." So i just bought the straight cut 4-syncho gears and brung them back (300pound was a good price less than 1/2 what they are here)
