Hi all When i was in england and went to santapod raceway i saw a red mini (roundy) do the 1/4 mile in 12.XX seconds. i thought boy that was quick and went and found him lining up for the next run. I asked to have a look under and he was running a tubo with a metro engine and it looked standard to me he also said the insides were pretty standard as well. His car was pretty standard looking as well, i know he had no rear seat. (was not a kitted out full race car) I asked what boost he was running and he said 18-20 boost, he also said he rarely blows head gaskets now and was putting out about 199HP (rolling road)( I know these need to takn with a grain of salt, but still thats a huge amount of power from an a-series) I just wish i grabbed a snap or two. Is this likely is this to be correct? Is that boost sustainable? Because it was seriosly quick, for a fairly stock looking car and motor |

I saw the car aswell it was very quick You will find that he doesn't run that sort of boost all the time only for the track, and it would be correct at 18-20psi. To do 12's big HP is needed for a standard weight car. An A series running this sort of boost and making this sort of power will not do lots of km's so will need rebuilding/checking regularly to prevent failure. |

Geoff Goodliff ran a supercharged engine in his mini sprint in 1967-69 as a hill climb car with 3 bar[45psi boost] The eng had tecalemit fuel injection and the comp ratio was 6.5-7 :1. The car made 200bhp at the wheels. Check out his website. |

hey thanks David That is incredible i didnt know you could send that much boost through a motor and it still stay together, I did a google search, a 3 1/2 foot sprint putting out around 200bhp thats crazily scary. I now know mini motors can hold and do a lot more than i thought. Thanks Brenton |

theres a yellow mini in the uk with the bmw k1100 head on it, in miniworld magazine on the dyno it ran at 210bhp at the wheels but the clutch was slipping and the turbo wasnt running full boost yet ![]() |

Nic's red car is very quick. Most of those fast cars are from turbominis.co.uk Hes seems to be one of the last on a 5 port, and done on a reasonable budget. |

And because i know VERY litttle about turboes i thought i would ask Thanks for that 92 That'd be me. The engine doesn't really come into it more so than the capacity. A 1330cc A-Series vs a 4EFTE 1331cc with same turbo same boost and mods on the a-series head should make very similar power. Afterall they are both 1.3L motors. The only difference would be in reliability, i can run 16psi all day every day and not encounter problems with engine or gearbox with stock internals. Bloody good effort to run 12's, i'd be interested to know what tyres he was using? If i put drag slicks on mine it would probably take another second off. |

Thanks Mini Mad, i unerstand now Wow that 200+BHP at the wheels that is CRAZY!!! Slightly diverting now How would you stop the driveshafts from snapping?? I have mate who is in to racing minis and he said back in the day he had a mini that would put out 135 at wheels and he kept snapping driveshafts so he ended up using morris 1300 ones (it has a hole in it so you drill it out and then i think thread a bolt into it) I also think i remember a post of yours mini mad that you kept snapping driveshafts. |

Driveshafts have to be designed right and of the right material. I'm using standard mini disc CV's and on my third revision of shafts (and i can change from 5th into 2nd @ 70km/h and easily spin both wheels). The key thing that i learned the hard was is that the shaft diameter should be smaller than the root diameter of the CV spline. This gives the shaft some flex to absorb the load. Morris 1300 CV's fit in with some machining of the hubs or fitting a spacer but i'm of the belief/hope? that you dont need to do that ![]() |
